Valuing Damaged Banksy Prints, by Nick on Feb 25, 2020 18:20:14 GMT 1, Would like some advice on the value of my damaged Banksy Love Rat please.
Some of you might remember the story as I shared the progress on here back in 2016.
I picked up a rat that was so unloved it had been folded in half and stored in a book! The following restoration worked wonders from the original state but there are still visible creases and skinning.
It looks fantastic on the wall and i'm not looking to sell at the moment but am curious to what those with knowledge of the market might think it's worth? I literally have no idea if its worth 10% market value or 70%. PC in hand.

Valuing Damaged Banksy Prints, by Rouen Cathedral on Feb 25, 2020 18:50:53 GMT 1, Will be interesting to hear opinions on this. Surprised you havenโt received a 100 yet.
My opinion is that it lowers the value probably at least 30%. But depending on the day There will always be buyers for banksy work no matter the condition. Heck people are buying door mats and actingโs insane. So a damaged and refurbished original print will def. have value for a long time.

Valuing Damaged Banksy Prints, by John The Badgers on Feb 25, 2020 20:02:57 GMT 1, Interesting thread Nick, and look forward to comments from people far more knowledgeable than me.
For me personally, as to the work/artist/image, almost enhances it? Would have no issues at all with it on my wall.
As to value, just me, but if I could have something like this for 20-30% less than a 'mint' one, I'd take it all day long.
Lovely print BTW.

(only plus of this is that she's never quibbled about an art purchase since).

Valuing Damaged Banksy Prints, by tab1 on Feb 26, 2020 4:34:34 GMT 1, Best way is to use a well known auction house set reserve for all costs ,cost of print plus restoration costs then let the market decide , usually good banksy auctions mid summer . With new work coming out now buyers will have more choice and will be fussier over older prints now , some one above offering 20% below mint one , deal there !

Valuing Damaged Banksy Prints, by Nick on Feb 26, 2020 10:51:27 GMT 1, Thanks for the responses so far guys, keep em coming. Has anyone had any experience buying or selling bad condition prints?
If this is really valued at 50%+ of a mint I really need to start thinking of insurance! How would this even work? Insure to replacement value of a mint edition as how do you source like for like?

Valuing Damaged Banksy Prints, by tab1 on Feb 26, 2020 13:15:36 GMT 1, What did you pay for the print ? What would you be happy to sell it for ? As the damage is unique , you can't really match to another , There were a few threads a few years ago of people actively buying damaged prints through wanted ads on here . If you can search them , see if they have sold them ?

Where the cardboard mat from the frame has covered a border of the print.
This part of the print has not been exposed to sunlight (uv) so when removed from the frame the paper has faded but yes paper under the mat has not.
Or if I have misunderstood, it could be a poor quality mat (say black) that has stained the paper.

Valuing Damaged Banksy Prints, by Duke Down Stairs on Feb 27, 2020 1:42:59 GMT 1, Think you'd be pleasantly surprised by how little effect it has on price if sold via auction house.
This my experience as both buyer and seller.
Many collectors out in the world much less prissy and fussy than what you find on this Forum.

Valuing Damaged Banksy Prints, by tab1 on Feb 27, 2020 2:33:49 GMT 1, Forum = fussiest buyers out there , damage equates to bargaining here. few years back a few heated debated discussions on the word mint , Auction easiest way forward , but fees and tax These do look very grubby and damaged but a few people are hoping / speculating banksy is the next Warhol / basquait and are buying in now for the future . If not desperate to sell , keep it long term especially if you bought cheap

Yeah it was an LA Trolleys, I think it was attached to the box of editions and someone grabbed it. I doubt it would have had PC, as it would be regarded as a backdoor. I still can't get my head round why someone would fold up a print and put it in a book. It was still an ยฃ80 print that someone bought, madness!

Valuing Damaged Banksy Prints, by crashwilliams on Feb 28, 2020 11:34:34 GMT 1, Interesting topic, thanks for posting.
I've a couple early pieces (POW/ยฃ75 Prints) that were framed way back, probably paying about the same price as the print(!) It's only recently whilst upgrading the framing that I've seen issues - mostly the framer using the wrong tape - Bignell has worked his magic and from the front, you would never tell. I'd imagined a lot of the very early pieces will have similar damage, not all but certainly more will than won't - though thats just my opinion.
I'd have no issues buying a 'damaged' piece, they're still collectable.
ETA: Bignell does have a significant amount of Banksy (and others) being remedied at anyone time, I've seen some incredible pieces at this workshop. I was there once, whilst I won't say what piece (+/- ยฃ50k), it had massive issues - something call 'spotting' - GB was scratching his head as to what to do. Contacted Banksy team and got some cuttings of the same piece and spend several weeks doing various tests (so as not to damage the 'damaged' piece) - a couple of months later, the damaged piece was gleaming and was offered it - sadly, I don't have that sort of money!

Valuing Damaged Banksy Prints, by Happy Shopper on Feb 28, 2020 11:47:26 GMT 1, I've heard of people getting Flag prints restored, but they haven't been able to provide any before and after pictures... which makes me suspicious. Bignell wouldn't touch mine when I took it to him.
Anyone have any good experience with repairing one of these?

I had one restored last year from a heavy crease bottom right corner. The crease was approx 4cm in length. The chromolux hadnโt split but was in a bad way. I also had some handling issues sorted along the edges. Iโd honestly say that the work was pretty much flawless following the restoration. It was a conservator in N.Ireland that did the work.

Valuing Damaged Banksy Prints, by alvington89 on Feb 28, 2020 15:14:05 GMT 1, It's quite interesting to see the state of some of these damaged print and what little regard some of the early owners had for them. Now that values are stratospheric of course everyone is very keen to repair damage in order to restore their current worth.
This whole thing reminds me of Banky's New York Central Park Stall which he did to illustrate a point.
The artwork is still the same and people assumed they the sprayed canvases were cheap knock off copies due to the venue where they were shown. So many people who had the opportunity of lifetime to pick up an original from probably the most famous artist of current times simply walked on by oblivious. (I bet lots of them kick themselves now!)
No doubt if they had been shown in an expensive gallery the perception would have been entirely different with queues round the block.
