Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by Express Post on Mar 16, 2020 1:41:05 GMT 1, Didn't help that Trump dismissed C19 from the get go. Also with very little testing being done, it doesn't paint a full picture. Could be really bad for all we know.

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by tab1 on Mar 16, 2020 4:20:57 GMT 1, 70 million uk population
1.9 million health care personnel
37746 people tested in uk for covid 19
4000 test kits available
Only hospitalised severe symptoms tested for covid 19
NHS has 5000 ventillators
Think government should put emphasis on enough kits to supply health care personnel , once staff are effected there will be no one to replace them as the U.K. Depends heavily on temporary staff from the eu but with travel restrictions that has ceased, also would continue the cycle if not detected .
With now press releases due with discussion about 4 months isolation for the elderly and now the peak can follow the following year it looks long term.
With not enough kits available it would be best if they needed to have a lockdown like Italy isolate a city at a time so as enough kits to test population of the city then move on to the next city, presently not enough kits present and testing is the key to stop the spread .slower impact on the economy
HIV / aids has been in research for 36 years and no vaccine was found or developed ? we are just assuming at this stage a vaccine can be found?! Talking about 80% of populations will be effected and the way countries are reacting looks pretty serious now .
Another note , during brexit , uk had all these consigincie plans in place in case no deals are made to stock warehouses for food products and charter ferries , uk produces 51% of food consumed the rest is imported ,a virus is present and no cure present and highly contagious and no firm trade deals with Europe and government release statements not to panic buy ?
It it is irrelevant comparing to the flu as flu is established in the population and no where near enough testing to compare , the virus has just been introduced to the uk population , once established as the same numbers then comparable scan be made

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by tab1 on Mar 16, 2020 4:58:20 GMT 1, A few prints will pay for private health care for a year! Now known can not rely on NHS in this crisis!Sales threads to follow shortly! Private health beds will be bought up by the government if they need them. At this stage more beds without extra ventillators would just be a hospice for many Instead of waiting you think they would set up temporary stations now instead of waiting for the peak as they keep releasing in statements , waiting for summer as seasonal flu would be down as more beds would be available ?its a new virus and unknown , no past data to study , it could excelerate ? They should be working on worse case scenarios not best case options most of uk hospitals are from the 70s and older and are out dated and not fit for purpose , stacking patients in corridors is common before the pandemic eu has also just introduced a new law limiting export of medical equipment to non Eu countries , wonder if the prebrexit warehouses were stocked with medical supplies as the government previously suggested

This was a good video for me to see. It actually settled my nerves a bit. Although previously I was saying we should shut down everything now, I now feel my opinion has changed.

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by astarti on Mar 16, 2020 8:34:52 GMT 1, Don't tell that to the Italians. Their #2 ranked healthcare system in the world SSN is putting a lot of people in the ground. It's embarrassing. I hope this stops racism in that country, starting at the Serie A level. Lukaku, Balotelli, Smalling, Henrique, Vieira, Koulibaly are all victims, and the racist fans have gone unpunished. Lazio fans are pretty bad. 144 deaths in Spain and 368 in Italy yesterday this is getting really bad
Here is one of the best articles explaining why this tragedy is happening in Italy and why the case fatality rate is so high in comparison to other places

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by mw on Mar 16, 2020 8:37:21 GMT 1, What the UK needs to start doing, which it isn't at the moment, is provide testing for the health care workforce. At the moment anyone with symptoms is having to self isolate. If we are going to have a chance of providing decent care we need as many of workforce at work, not sat at home wondering if they have it or not. Come on Boris sort it out,it's not rocket science

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by Express Post on Mar 16, 2020 9:19:04 GMT 1, One of the better articles out there explaining the situation. It goes to show that having a highly ranked healthcare system means nothing when it can't deliver. Or it is delivering, but the Italian elderly are weak as.
Only stat missing are the number of testings completed since January for both countries, but that's already been covered elsewhere. Italy were reactive, and Sth Korea were proactive.
One thing I will point out though were the Italian citizen's laissez-faire attitude towards the outbreak since Jan. Disgraceful.

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by mw on Mar 16, 2020 9:31:00 GMT 1, Sorry, haven't got time to read articles but one of the big differences between Korea and Italy is who is being tested. If you test everyone, like Korea, then you will get alot lower rates than if you are only testing those that are seriously ill in hospital.

Having a highly ranked healthcare system means nothing if the flow of gravely ill people exceeds its capacity and crashes. And that is what happened in Italy. And thats why other countries have taken an aggressive approach of containing the exposure to the virus by semi lock down (Greece, Norway etc) or total lock down (Spain, Albania). In theory, epidemiologists believe, that by taking such action people won't get sick all at once but gradually so that the health care system will be able to provide to those less fortunate that will become gravely ill.

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by Express Post on Mar 16, 2020 10:54:56 GMT 1, They corrected and added the min after the 6. 6min 42secs. They are not Clark Kent.
Self Quarantined here...I got the flu symptoms but can't get tested for corona virus, it's no joke...lungs feel heavy causing light headiness feeling like i've never felt before...it all started with very dry chopped lips about 10 days ago...pretty healthy myself , can run a mile in 6.42 seconds...or 7.10 seconds at a more manageable speed (by USMilitary standards that puts you in the top 2%). this virus knows no boundaries. People in NYC are tooo liberal in the way they are going about this virus..i believe they are at stage 3 of crisis management: "We say that maybe we should do something about it, but there is nothing we can do" excerpt from a masterpiece of political satire(truth in comedy) Are you serious? "a mile in 6.42 seconds"? According to my maths that's about 500 miles per hour! Olympic gold medalist sprinters run a mile in about 4 minutes.

Sorry mate, but nobody wants to receive a parcel now. You have to break the isolation in some ways. I had to go to the street a minutes ago to get a bundle from dhl, they are not allowed to enter the buildings. So, yes, I’m afraid that at least in Spain there will be hesitation

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by Express Post on Mar 16, 2020 12:39:10 GMT 1, Just picked up something, and this applies to Italy, if the government can't protect the community's most vulnerable, the elderly in this instance, they have failed.
Sorry, haven't got time to read articles but one of the big differences between Korea and Italy is who is being tested. If you test everyone, like Korea, then you will get alot lower rates than if you are only testing those that are seriously ill in hospital. I'm not convinced. Correlation is not the same as causation.

Sorry, what I trying to say was if you are testing the broader population then on average your results will mimic the population age spread. If, however, you are only testing those in hospital or those that are more ill, then by the nature of c19 you will be tester an older age group.

I think delivery will be the big issue, will the couriers even be able to fly between countries. From a logistics point of view rather than spreading the virus (which is obv also a thing)

So if people self-isolate when they have symptoms it wont make a blind bit of difference if everybody or nobody is tested. Actually that's the whole point of the test: the test tells you if you're positive even if you're asymptomatic....

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by alexandros88 on Mar 16, 2020 13:45:09 GMT 1, Actually that's the whole point of the test: the test tells you if you're positive even if you're asymptomatic.... That's not what I heard and that is not what usually happens with virus diagnostic tests. You can have the AIDS virus but the test will not show positive until there is a high number of antibodies circulating in the blood. The same process is involved in the corona virus. Tests do not show the presence of actual viruses. They show the body's response to the viruses. I am sure there is a minimum threshold, but that's not the point here. The point is that there are lot of people out there, with no cough / no fever that still are positive and are "spreading it" - And yes, if they would test it, they would caught as positive.
This is what happening a lot with football players and also most of the politicians that tested positive. Most of them are asymptomatic but still tested positive.

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by Express Post on Mar 16, 2020 13:49:08 GMT 1, The test triggers the next step which depends on the severity of the condition. It is either you get hooked up to a ventilator in an icu ward, or you go home and self quarantine for however long it takes to recover.
The test is the only thing that can detect the virus.
Contact tracing commences next to notify others which will either lead to further treatment or self quarantining. Effectively stemming the spread and mitigating contamination.
Testing only flags the infection, the rest is up to the individual and the health system to do something about it. Better to know and take action than not to know and infect the rest of the population.
Common sense really.

Have reached out to and bought a few small originals from some of my favorite "unknown" artists to do what I can to support them through uncertain times. Many of the artists I collect are not full time artists, and have to rely on other hourly work to supplement their income.

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by Express Post on Mar 16, 2020 14:08:03 GMT 1, There is an acceptable level of deaths, and then there is Italy.
US are starting to pick up, so the next 4-6 weeks are going to be interesting.
Just picked up something, and this applies to Italy, if the government can't protect the community's most vulnerable, the elderly in this instance, they have failed. I don't think that really works as an argument. Governments are not omniscient and omnipotent. With the best government in the world, people will still catch the virus and people will still die.

I don't think that really works as an argument. Governments are not omniscient and omnipotent. With the best government in the world, people will still catch the virus and people will still die.

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by Lroy on Mar 16, 2020 14:11:44 GMT 1, I am wondering if people will become hesitant to buying art online. Are you buying less? On Ebay for example?

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by Happy Shopper on Mar 16, 2020 14:57:41 GMT 1, Actually that's the whole point of the test: the test tells you if you're positive even if you're asymptomatic.... From a news article I saw on TV there's 2 types of test. The ones that only test your antibodies are the more basic tests that could be sent to pharmacies, etc for self testing.
Although testing won't exactly stop the spread, I think people knowing they had it would help with other things. Like, whether you're immune after, and can therefore help others. Most people won't know whether they can risk that or not!

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by Rubberneck on Mar 16, 2020 15:28:32 GMT 1, The way things are going now I think the art market is definitely gonna take a hit. Even precious metals have dropped in price and they've always been a safe haven. I agree with that.. look at the zero effect of the massive stimulus packages that been put in place in the last week. In the mid term it will stabilise the banks once businesses fold and loans are defaulted. It might see a drop as collections are put up for sale to recover losses.
