The letter W wasn't added to the alphabet until the middle ages, (to represent sounds from the Germanic languages which did not exist as independent phonemes in the Romance languages).

Or.. J & U already existed as I & V.. and though it was only after the Renaissance that they became letter's in their own right.. they did in fact exist :-)
