Harland Miller โข Who Cares Wins Print, by Ottomatik on Dec 5, 2014 3:30:57 GMT 1, I love his work. Been a fan for sometime. Too bad his cost was above me once I discovered him/his work. The pricing is kinda redonk.
I'd give a kidney for a 'This is Where it's ......' Or swap a Miss Bugs OG for one.
Do you hear me Dungle?

Harland Miller โข Who Cares Wins Print, by sgolby on Dec 5, 2014 5:03:31 GMT 1, word- up @ling, Thanks for sharing. I watched the video and appreciate his method way more now. However, again, I just don't find him all that witty. Actually, that is not true. He is rather witty. However, How many times would I really want to read a witty phrase??? His work lacks a certain depth that would captivate me day after day... and then what? They are beautiful, but still only beautifully packaged copy-write... That said, the Tribute to Delorian and Caruthers were gorgeous, but the rest seem a bit lazy, and very one note to me... no nuance, no subtlety, just a "here, here is what I want to say to you... f**k your interpretation."
Now, the flip side to this is that a novelist has distilled his craft to the point where he is able to tell... and sell a story in a twitter caption sized sentence painted on canvas...

In a second. I think they are great. Though I prefer the ruder (for want of a better word) ones than who cares wins.

Happy with the size or frustrated you didn't get a bigger one?
Be great to see a photo of it framed up.

Harland Miller โข Who Cares Wins Print, by bpm on Dec 5, 2014 17:13:38 GMT 1, May I be the first to say that I simply do not understand the fuss about Harland Miller. Nor do I understand the why his work is so expensive... They are literally slogans that I see at souvenir stores put on penguin book covers... Sorry guys, I do not mean to be smug here, but I really do not get it... Phew and here I thought I was the only one. While they're certainly witty and fun and decent to look at. The pricing seems outrageous. Maybe at a lower price point I could see getting one to put up on a wall but at those prices? That's nearly an impossible sell for me.

The title to me is what first gives it the impact. That said the impressive nature of the size and display of some of those shown do make them look fantastic. At ยฃ3000 I would need a lottery win to tempt me but in reply to the 'would I buy at ยฃ50' then hell yeah I would!

I don't so much have a problem with giclee, but prefer Screenprint as it is the imperfections that I love... Paint smears on the back (with occasional fingerprint), tiny paint drippings, etc.

No Sir, Not trying to poop on his work at all. In fact I have been reading up on him all day and like him more and more... That said, mys issue with a giclee is simply that it seems to be a shortcut, and at 3,600 pounds this should be the highest possible quality without being an inkjet print. The Who Cares Wins is half the price and is a screen print. A Giclee seems more mass, and the idea with a screen print is that only a finite number can be made and then the screens begin to ware out. Just my thoughts, but if you think about it I am sure you will agree that that is a HEFTY sum to dish out for a digital print.

Harland Miller โข Who Cares Wins Print, by kendo on Dec 5, 2014 21:29:48 GMT 1, Very tempted myself - I have 'Too Cool To Lose' and it is very similar in size to the small one. Edition of 50 as well! Happy with the size or frustrated you didn't get a bigger one? Be great to see a photo of it framed up. I had always wanted a Harland Miller print but the larger prints were always out of my reach. This smaller size offered the opportunity to purchase one of his prints and with it being a 10 colour screenprint (rather than giclee), low edition size made it very appealing.
If you have the room and as the photos in the this thread show, the larger prints will have more impact and can look stunning! As this new print is similar in size I am tempted so I can hang them together.
I have no photos to hand but will try over the next couple of days!

Harland Miller โข Who Cares Wins Print, by Deleted on Dec 5, 2014 21:42:06 GMT 1, They definitely work best in larger spaces, which unfortunately I don't have masses of. Really like his heroin print but not quite sure whether that would make it past the family art army (a little bit more guerilla than the art police) but probably the only Miller I could afford without starving myself.

Harland Miller โข Who Cares Wins Print, by met on Dec 15, 2014 12:14:54 GMT 1, dumb American question - Does 1.600 mean 1,600? In the most friendly manner, I'll challenge this statement, simply because over-analysis is my indulgence and I take great interest in trivial matters.
Humorous self-deprecation, I can appreciate. But query what the comment suggests about your perception of your country, of yourself, and how others may view the US, Americans or you. Does the casual acknowledgement of a negative stereotype serve to fight it, or perpetuate it?
This reminds me of calls from people I know who start off the telephone conversations with, "Hi, it's just me." Which I find disappointing. I can't help but get irritated on their behalf, usually to their astonishment.

Harland Miller โข Who Cares Wins Print, by met on Dec 15, 2014 12:27:59 GMT 1, Thank you for posting.
There is a loucheness and calm, understated self-assurance that's appealing about Harland Miller's manner.
I remember well this particular show at White Cube. It may have been the last at Hoxton Square before they shut down that London space.
In the interview, Miller has a great point about the danger of using text โ how it becomes the most important aspect once added to a painting. If people don't relate to the text, they won't even bother registering the painting itself.
While I'm fond of Miller's work generally, as words, statements or titles, Who Cares Wins and High on Hope do little for me. I don't find them particularly funny or interesting. And just as the artist stated, this does indeed discourage me from giving any thought to the actual artwork, the way it's been produced, etc.

Harland Miller โข Who Cares Wins Print, by met on Dec 15, 2014 13:50:04 GMT 1, word- up @ling, Thanks for sharing. That said, the Tribute to Delorian and Caruthers were gorgeous, but the rest seem a bit lazy, and very one note to me... no nuance, no subtlety, just a "here, here is what I want to say to you... f**k your interpretation." Now, the flip side to this is that a novelist has distilled his craft to the point where he is able to tell... and sell a story in a twitter caption sized sentence painted on canvas...S Very good comment. It's an interesting way of considering Miller's paintings.
Regarding your previous point about laziness or the work being one-note, I myself don't share this view. To me the titles have a lot of scope for nuance and varying interpretations.
Depending on the day, my mood, what I've just seen / heard / read / experienced, the same words will bring to mind different things.
Even the more obvious jokey titles such as Incurable Romantic Seeks Dirty Filthy Whore or Don't Let The Bastards Cheer You Up can lead me on quite distinct intellectual, emotional, or even nostalgic journeys. Then consider text like I Am The One I've Been Waiting For โ which has the potential to take viewers not only in different directions but also in circles.

Harland Miller โข Who Cares Wins Print, by sgolby on Dec 15, 2014 14:55:05 GMT 1, word- up @ling, Thanks for sharing. That said, the Tribute to Delorian and Caruthers were gorgeous, but the rest seem a bit lazy, and very one note to me... no nuance, no subtlety, just a "here, here is what I want to say to you... f**k your interpretation." Now, the flip side to this is that a novelist has distilled his craft to the point where he is able to tell... and sell a story in a twitter caption sized sentence painted on canvas...S Very good comment. Then consider text like I Am The One I've Been Waiting For โ which has the potential to take viewers not only in different directions but also in circles. met, you are correct, since writing those posts a few weeks back, i have paid more attention to Harland and viewed his works almost daily. Depending on my frame of mind, the words elicit different emotions and thoughts... I am starting to agree more with the flip side of my argument than my original opinion... S
