We talked about what artists going up, but what about down, by cest on Jul 6, 2020 21:19:02 GMT 1, So, I recently went to purchase discussions about a Jonas wood print... It is one of his more rare works but not as sought-after.
After talking to several folks about his prints, it seems his market is really falling off for the less sought after pieces.
Now days, when I buy a work, I try to purchase something that won't lose value immediately... Mainly in case I lose my job, and I have couple of kids to feed. I do serious due diligence on valuations and if I feel I can't unload for at least the same price I purchase then I don't buy it. this is mainly for pieces over a couple thousand usd.
I just could not find a satisfactory floor for the print and because of that I opted not to purchase it.
What other artists are having a precipitous drop in art values?

We talked about what artists going up, but what about down, by Winter on Jul 6, 2020 23:16:56 GMT 1, Problem with this forum is most people think a market is in decline when prints go off the boil. Most big collectors don’t bother with the print market. Jonas Wood market is very healthy if you ignore his print market. That said his better prints still do well. Last week a Jonas Wood work on paper sold at auction for $275k. Compare that to a large Harland miller canvas hammering at $80k.

Interesting you mention Katrin Fridriks, I still really enjoy her work but I’ve noticed prints sitting a long time unsold now. May be a different story for an original piece however?

They all have talent. For every amazing print they do, there are three that shouldn't be made into prints. It seems like snik cares more about cutting the stencils than the art itself these days. Not sure what happened there.
what Pez are you talking about?

We talked about what artists going up, but what about down, by jimmyjam on Jul 7, 2020 2:45:41 GMT 1, George Condo prices are extremely high. Was offered some originals and drawings from his gallery and the prices now are insane. Actually most of the blue chip artists mentioned are doing pretty well right now. If anything the art market is exceptionally healthy during all this chaos. If f*cking mr doodle is selling at Christie’s for high prices then wtf.

I agree. Lower prices better for me but I don’t get it.
I do think it is only the prints though.

I wonder if the original pricings and scarcity will eventually drag the print values up.

I think this is a little ‘generalistic’? Quality pieces still increase in value...one of the best, if not the best Chalks, sold for £10k recently. A lot of recent releases have been up for sale recently but the quality pieces are still a relative rarity.
