Desert Island Art, by verylittlehelps on Jul 23, 2020 9:55:46 GMT 1, Hi All,
I love listening to Desert Island Discs and thought it'd be interesting to transfer the idea over to art.
The idea is simple - you are on a desert island and can only afford to be with 5 pieces (the radio show is 8 but that seems a little excessive for this). These don't necessarily have to be your most expensive pieces, just whatever you will enjoy looking at and reminiscing over on the island.
Assuming your 5 choices were then washed away and you could only save 1, which would it be (add an asterisk next to that choice).
To start things off, here's my choices with a short justification for each:
*- us I Fought The Law (Banksy) - my only authenticated piece by the artist. His work got me into all of this.
- Love Letter (Pejac) - this was my first big purchase, so will always be special. Love the artist and he personalised the letter to me and my wife.
- York (H Miller) - picked this up on day 2 of the show before knowing how crazy things would get (wish I'd got a few more now!). Lived in York for part of my life so particularly relevant and special to me.
- Be Bold (B Eine) - I appreciate this one is a little controversial but I love the message it carries, my wife and I regularly remind ourselves of it before making big decisions and I think it could be handy on an island to have that reminder.
- Social Distancing (Pure Evil) - This one is all about my wife. Having dragged her to galleries, exhibitions and random walls over the past decade, this was the first print she really wanted and went out of her way to buy.
Saving one is very tricky. My head says Banksy, my heart says York. Decided on Banksy as I wouldn't have known any of these other artists had I not got into this world through him.
Would love to see other choices and reasons why.

Desert Island Art, by verylittlehelps on Jul 24, 2020 8:24:13 GMT 1, Good thread idea. For me it's stuff that's particularly personal to me - from a period of time, or an encounter. I'll try and revisit this post and add images when I'm not on my phone, but links are in 😉 These are not in any particular order 1) Conor Harrington 'Where the sun does shine' The first major print I bought, in 2007 from someone called Thomas on here. I fretted for days that I'd wired £750 to a scammer, and then the Lazarides tube arrived 😉. Still own it, and love it www.myartbroker.com/artist/conor-harrington/where-the-sun-does-shine/2) Ian Francis 'Red Chopper' I fell in love with the original, but could only afford the print. Nearly sold this a few times as it's a large piece, but eventually hung it in a decently-lit spot, and now it's firmly on the keep list. www.redpropeller.co.uk/sale/copy-of-red-chopper-by-ian-francis3) Nathan Ford 'Passage' I've known Nate a few years, and collect his work. This is a particular poignant piece, from 2017, painted soon after he lost a young relative. Pride of place above turntables, so looked at a lot. 4) RemiRough 'if only silence could speak' A 1xrun release from maybe 2012. I like Remi's work a lot, from back in the day ROUGH wall pieces around South London, and like the pallete on this one www.1xrun.com/run/If_Only_Silence_Could_Speak/** 5) Nathan Ford 'untitled' I asked, drunk and cheeky at his PV, if he'd be interested in me sitting for him at some point. It happened. I treated myself for my 40th live.staticflickr.com/8420/8703612393_59984033c2_m.jpgAs to what I'd keep, gotta be the last one as it's pure personal, and a unique piece.
Great post. Love the portrait! I can see why thats the keeper!

Desert Island Art, by Deleted on Jul 26, 2020 12:16:55 GMT 1, 1) Pose - Doll The first 'proper' print I ever bought and I still love it. In the middle of a big white wall, those colours look incredible.
2) Banksy - Banksquiat Self-explanatory really. Was v lucky to get it in the GDP draw and I love it having it on my wall. It's one of my favourite Banksy images. Can't believe I own it.
3) Euan Roberts - Elvis Flamingos This only cost me £70 at Art Car Boot Fair, but it's one of my most valued (personally, not financially). It's the first time I bought an original by an artist I like. I really enjoy the cheerfulness of most of Euan's work and this shows a vase covered in flamingos in Elvis Presley wigs. Just makes me smile.
4) JR - Ballerina Jumping In Containers Not a lot of photographic work in my collection, but I wish I had more JR. I don't have any wall space for any of his larger work, though hope to one day. Bought this one when I couldn't really afford it and thought I might have to sell it soon after. Very glad I didn't and don't think I ever will.
5) Charming Baker - Donkey One of the 100 original donkey drawings he released at Art Car Boot Fair last year. I adore Baker's drawings. He can make seemingly rough scribbles really evocative. Have owned several of his prints but always wanted an original. Couldn't believe I could get one at a price I could afford. And I got exactly the one I wanted from the edition.
If I'm being honest, I'd save the Banksy. Even on a desert island, I'd still be looking at it and thinking, 'Fuck, I own a signed Banksy'.

Dont blame you one bit for saving the banksy. That particular print is my white whale. Very jealous!
