Keith Haring • Skateboard Decks, by kurz on Jul 23, 2020 18:07:49 GMT 1,
Greeetings, all,
I'm considering sale/trade of the Keith Haring "Tribal Man" deck that I purchased from Keith Haring's Pop-Shop when I was about 15. By some miracle, I never put trucks on it and skated it around, so now it hangs on my living room wall in near perfect condition.
Mine is the grey/silver edition. Very little info is out there about this work, but Artspace sold the beige/black one at auction for over $20,000 last year.
Open to straight sale (shipping from US) or trade for something commensurate from the usual suspects:
Banksy Kaws Invader Faile Haring Sachs Harland Miller
Thanks & best, Kurz
Other info I've been able to dig up:
1986 Keith Haring Tribal Man deck
limited edition of 100
Serigraph on wood
29.90 x 10.20 in
75.9 x 25.9 cm
Serigraph signed and dated 1986
Produced by Art Deck, in collaboration with NewYork Skateboards Inc., sold at the Pop Shop on Lafayette in the late '80s

All the best with the sale, hope this finds a good home.

Keith Haring • Skateboard Decks, by kurz on Jul 23, 2020 20:07:48 GMT 1, My recollection is $50, which wiped out my budget for anything else. I was so thrilled to have been able to visit the Pop Shop. It was my first trip to NYC also. I have a couple of the OG Swatches too, it was discovering those at the mall that got me into Keith Haring's work and also into graffiti and collecting.

Thank you, and thanks everyone else commenting for the enthusiasm - you're all making me re-think whether I really want to part with this piece : ) I am a massive Keith Haring fan, couldn't possibly afford this but I would have given anything to be able to say I visited his NY Pop Shop and bought a skate deck. Like a few folk have said here unless you are utterly needing to sell it, don't. I guarantee the minute you do you will regret it. This is a little gem of Haring history in simply beautiful original condition. Treasure it.

Keith Haring • Skateboard Decks, by mrizzle on Jul 24, 2020 2:15:22 GMT 1, What an absolute treasure that is and I love the story that goes along with it. Seems such a shame to see you part with it, especially after it introduced you into street/urban/graffiti art. I really do think you’d end up regret selling it and it would surely be incredibly difficulty to replace. Hold onto it!!
Now...Banksy Grannies...go on...

It's a thing of complete beauty. Haring will hold value in the longer term, so I say definitely keep and enjoy it for a many years more. Thanks, fortunately, I'm not in need of the cash at the moment. Was only thinking of parting with it to acquire something new for my collection. Based on the response within the forum and the PMs, I'm leaning towards keeping it in my collection - it does have a lot of sentimental value in addition to the aesthetic value. Thanks for the input!

Seems such a shame to see you part with it, especially after it introduced you into street/urban/graffiti art. I really do think you’d end up regret selling it and it would surely be incredibly difficulty to replace. Hold onto it!! Now...Banksy Grannies...go on... Here's how I got my hands on Grannies 97/500. In 2006, I was living in Los Angeles and working as an assistant in the motion picture department at William Morris Agency. My salary was $450/wk, so I was pretty much living on credit cards.
I was familiar with Banksy's work, but not knowledgeable, certainly didn't understand the anonymity aspect. A friend called and asked if I wanted to go to the private preview of the Banksy exhibition in Downtown LA - she said she might be on the guestlist.
We arrived at the warehouse and were greeted by a large bouncer who looked like a Hell's Angel. He was a nice enough guy and my friend Carly told him that Jason Bentley (KCRW DJ) had invited her. He looked at the listed and said he didn't see any Jason Bentley on the list, and said to step aside as the entrance was starting to get very crowded as celebs were arriving; Brad & Angelina, Zach De La Rocha, Perry & Etty Farrell, all walked by us and into the event. Within about 15 minutes there were about 150 people crowding the entrance and Carly and I had been pushed to the margins. I made my way to the front of the crush and got close to the bouncer, and when he lowered the clipboard with the guestlist I craned my neck and zeroed in on a couple random names. I went back to Carly and said come with me. We reapproached the bouncer and said, "hey it occurred to us that maybe Jason put our names on the list rather than his, would you mind taking a look?" and he said "sure, what are your names?" I gave him the names I poached and sure enough, we were allowed inside.
We checked out the work, had a couple drinks, and spotted a merch/table booth. The line wasn't long, but for some reason, it took about 2 hours to get to the front. The entire time I was debating whether to buy all 6 prints for $3,000 or only one, and which one it be. Since I didn't think I even had $3000 of credit left on my card, and certainly no idea how i'd pay it off, so I decided on Grannies. Carly also bought Grannies for herself. She has hers in LA, and I have mine here in Miami.

Also, I’d have been quite starstruck seeing Zack de la Rocha. Angelina would likely have drawn my (unwanted) attention too. Haha.
