Banksy altered sea view triptych sells for £2.2m at auction, by robo on Jul 28, 2020 22:20:05 GMT 1, A Banksy triptych, which aims to make a powerful political statement on the global migrant crisis, sold for £2.2m at an auction in London that also featured works by Rembrandt, Picasso, and Bridget Riley. The three paintings were offered by Banksy to raise money for a hospital in Bethlehem. Entitled Mediterranean Sea View 2017, the three traditionally framed paintings appear to be Romantic-era seascapes but the lifebuoys and orange life jackets washed on to the shore tell a different story. Banksy made the additions to the three found paintings. The triptych had been estimated at a value of £800,000 to £1.2m, but after a final bidding tussle between two anonymous buyers it was sold at Sotheby’s for £2.2m, the second-highest price ever for a work by the artist, according to the auction house

Banksy altered sea view triptych sells for £2.2m at auction, by Emile on Jul 29, 2020 6:54:05 GMT 1, Disclaimer: *I'm not a Banksy expert, nor do I claim to be one*
But isn't that a relatively weak result? Monkey Parliament sold almost a year ago for roughly 10 M. Prices of other works and prints have risen significantly over the last few year, even since Monkey Parliament sold.
This is in my opinion a very strong work, which consists of effectively 3 paintings (which work on their own as well, so a sort of 3 for the price of 1 deal). I'm sure others would say that MP is much better (and bigger) and they're right, but is it 5 to 6 times 'better' (in the current market)?
I would have expected 3M+, I guess

£3m+? Based on what?
Did you see the works?
They’re much smaller, much less aesthetically pleasing, required very little work by team Banksy (found oil paintings, some life jackets added), and overall a less consistently interesting subject matter.
This is a great result for Team Banksy, not so much for the buyer.

I think the buyer did very well as its going to help thousands of children, what a wonderful thing to be able to do.
Typing this made me wonder if there are tax breaks for the buyer or buyers business charity wise? Will the auction house take the full commission on the sale or donate part of it?
Anyhow, brilliant all round

Can’t wait to go back to the Walled Off and see what’s taken it’s place. Win win.

A great nights work.
Someone paid 2.8m USD for a Banksy OG.
This strengthens the market yet again and on we go.
All those prints that aren’t available seem good buys.
Kerrrrboooom !

Higher price than many of the greats in the same auction, Haring, Basquiat and Picasso.

A single Crude Oils painting sold earlier this month for € 1.5 M.
On top of that you're ignoring the other arguments I gave: this is effectively three paintings, prices have gone up significantly over the last year/months and this is for charity, meaning not only possible tax benefits but also that people tend to bid higher (as it's for charity).
You ask me "based on what" but don't give any prices/auction results yourself. I'm not saying it's a bad result, but I guess that personally, I think the buyer did great.

Banksy altered sea view triptych sells for £2.2m at auction, by Graham H on Jul 29, 2020 10:48:20 GMT 1, It is three paintings, but for resell value they would never be split as there would only be one COA.. which im assuming will say Triptych on it.. so the quantity of paintings in my opinion is irrelevant..Its one piece of art
I dont also think how much work the artist did on the piece is of any relevance to price either.. hardly difficult to spray stencil a GWRB on a canvas and those would go for large amounts of money. I happen to think they are extremely well painted and think that there would have been quite a large amount of time taken on them.. the detail is superb
Subject matter though could be a challenge for some people to hang.. but its difficult to say if the buyer spending $2 million plus will hang them or put them in a bonded warehouse..

This triptych is very serious and political, so not going to be every millionaire's cup of tea (Monkey Parliament is obviously political, but in a humorous way). If you compare it to Love Is In The Bin, nee Girl With Balloon, it's made double that, and that's his most popular image.

Not everyone is vocal with their views on migrants / immigration and unfortunately a lot of people are against the migrants and do have racist views Underlying basis of brexit was immigration and migrants Lord sugar two years ago made a racist joke about migrants that was not addressed At the time . A lot of the buyers that can afford this item do not agree with migration And immigration which the piece represents . Also to factor in what the subject matter represents , the mass drownings and deaths which most people will not like to be faced with and have a reminder on their walls. Raising awareness and for a good cause but not everyone views from the same page
