Interior Design/Furniture Suggestions, by mrizzle on Aug 6, 2020 13:41:44 GMT 1, I hope you don’t mind me posing this here (and that I get some responses) but we moved into a new home at the end of February - thankfully just evading the lockdown restrictions which would have delayed the move by several months. The new place is a town house and quite different to our last home. The furniture we have has been amalgamated over the years and, in truth, is not really to our tastes now and also don’t really fit with the house/how we would like the house to be. That said, we also don’t really have a “vision” for the place yet.
I’ve spent many hours pouring over the ‘Show us your pad’ thread (but didn’t want to dilute the thread by posing this there) and seeing the wonderful things that many of you have done to your homes and the exemplary taste that so many of you clearly have and I’m really hoping that some of you will indulge me with some suggestions.
What I’m looking for are any suggestions you might have for places to visit for ideas/online stores/specific pieces etc that you think might be worth considering. I’m looking really broadly so not specifically for anything...more for everything.
I live in Scotland so I would most likely really be looking for UK/EU stores but it might be helpful to others if broader suggestions are shared. (It’s not all about me!!) Besides, I may be able to source them domestically or at least something similar.
Appreciate that this isn’t directly art related so I hope I’ve popped it in the right section and that some of you may be able to help refine my thinking and find some things that aren’t just from the usual suspects of shops.
Lastly, my budget isn’t endless here but we can save where necessary.
Hopefully you wonderful ladies and gentlemen will help me and others by offering some suggestions. Have a great day everyone regardless.

Interior Design/Furniture Suggestions, by Charlesworth on Aug 6, 2020 14:02:28 GMT 1, I used Pinterest for a lot of ideas when I was doing work on my house.
you can use very specific searches and save or 'pin' any of the results that you like.
It then uses the photos that you've saved to give other suggestions that you might like.

Interior Design/Furniture Suggestions, by Deleted on Aug 6, 2020 16:28:29 GMT 1, Really depends on what your taste/style is, but I've largely furnished my place by looking around at high end furniture stores, e.g. SCP, Conran Shop, Case Furniture, to work out what I like, then saving searches for those things on eBay. I'm obsessive about quality when it comes to furniture, but quality comes at a price and many of the things I want are beyond my means, if bought brand new.
I like a lot of Matthew Hilton pieces, but I'm not in a position to buy a sofa for £5k or a bed for £1,800. By being patient, I've found both for about 10% of their original price, in near perfect condition (the bed was brand new, from the factory, but with a scratch on the back of the headboard). I get them collected by courier, which tends to be about £50 per piece.
I'll also buy mid-century furniture that needs some basic refurb, e.g. sanding, oiling, maybe small repairs. Have found some fantastic pieces that way, because most people don't want things that require any work. I am not a carpenter, but anyone can do basic repairs.
This is no good to you if you don't want anything secondhand, but it's amazing what you get if you don't need everything brand new. And an upholstery cleaner and a bit of patience is a lot cheaper than a brand new sofa.

...is also a good resource to start thinking about spaces...might help to start zeroing on where you want to go stylistically.
This is a great time of year if you want to splurge on a nice high end modern / contemporary piece or two as all the upscale European furniture and lighting companies generally have a sizable sale (B&B Italia, Minotti, Ligne Roset, etc. are usually 25% off). Herman Miller and Knoll both do sales two times a year if I'm remembering correctly.

Can you let us have some examples / direction regarding style or look?
Makes it much easier to help as there is so much different stuff out there.

Interior Design/Furniture Suggestions, by mrizzle on Aug 7, 2020 12:16:21 GMT 1, Many thanks to all of you who have commented and provided suggestions of places to look for inspiration or indeed particular items. All really helpful so far and much appreciated.
I did think latterly that my parameters were probably a bit too broad...as in there were no parameters. Sorry! After some thought and discussion, broadly speaking, we would be focusing primarily on a fairly clean (urban) modern/contemporary look. However, I have got a man cave on the bottom floor which I have a bit of free reign over. I’m in two minds about that space but it’s sunken mostly below ground level with two (quite narrow) high frosted glass windows. I’m quite interested with going for something quite industrial or bohemian in that space. I also quite like the idea of the odd restored/vintage pieces here and there too. I have probably got quirkier tastes than my wife. No...I definitely do.
It may also be helpful to share that it’s a new build town house (split across three levels) so it’s very much a blank canvas. The kitchen is modern and really just needs finishing touches and some form of sideboard really. The rest of the house is probably the primary focus.
Really grateful to any of you reading and commenting. It’s already been really helpful to shape our thinking and give a bit more focus to what we want to do with the place.

I second this. Houzz is great, you can search by style, colour, room and size and all of them are modern and nice on the eye.

I’ve never seen anything like these before and they’re fantastic!! Quite like the fact that every piece they create is unique. Thanks for sharing.

Interior Design/Furniture Suggestions, by Tethane on Oct 31, 2020 14:01:42 GMT 1, You’re probably all sorted now but I thought I’d contribute anyway! Furniture/product is a bit of a passion of mine.
People have mentioned SCP already but I’ll just reaffirm that they hold an amazing collection and do support some up and coming as well as more established designers.
Aram store are great and carry Vitra, Magis, Artek and many others.
Twenty Twenty One are another must view and sell both contemporary design alongside some vintage pieces.
If you’re in to mid century and you can get in to London (post covid probably!) then going to the mid century modern fair you can pick up/barter for some great items. Their website now has an amazing directory of dealers and shops www.modernshows.com

Thank you so much for these wonderful suggestions. I am, in truth far from sorted and it’ll be a works in progress for many months yet I suspect so all contributions and suggestions are most welcome and gladly received!
Vitra and Magis I am familiar with bit Vitek less so. Twenty twenty one is entirely new to keep and love the idea of the fair(s) you highlighted too. Lots for me to investigate so much appreciated and please keep them coming everyone!

I’ll keep popping up some recommendations then! In regards to sofa for your man cave I can recommend the Togo by Ligne Rosset, it’s spendy but modular and you can move the parts to different configurations, it’s a bit old school now but I fell in love with it some time ago and it will always hold a squishy place in my heart!

Interior Design/Furniture Suggestions, by ashley123 on Jan 9, 2021 18:56:03 GMT 1, If you are going to furnish your apartment or house, my advice is to look for the ideas online (of course, in case you can't afford to hire a professional). I personally do this way. Also, I find the reviews to be helpful like thebestreclinersreview. Most of them have links to the stores you can buy them/check the price (usually Amazon). The last thing I bought was a pair of modern recliners. I'm happy with this purchase.

Interior Design/Furniture Suggestions, by stock on Feb 16, 2021 22:14:18 GMT 1, -Look for ex-display items, Conran shop has an outlet, most furniture shops do. - I’m a fan of gumtree/ Shpock lots of amazing pieces can be found there, it helps in gumtree, etc. to narrow down by looking for brands you like- I always search for conran, moooi, Graham & greene - lighting is important
just spent two years remodelling our entire flat w/ interior designers and the most helpful stuff I learned is:
- Make sure you measure everything- your space and the piece you’re thinking of buying. - don’t buy things in haste, it sucks but it just takes a really long time for things to come together, try not to buy quickly if you love something in isolation or think they’re a good deal. If they don’t don’t go with the scheme it’ll end up looking off - high and low budget things mixed are great, there are great and bad design in both, don’t base on price - it’s worth spending more money on something if you really love it, you see it everyday, I went for some cheaper options and regret not going for the more expensive ones I liked more
