Is It Worth Preserving? , by peted on Aug 7, 2020 8:23:56 GMT 1, I was passing through Clerkenwell, London yesterday and came across this Banksy art work which you will all, no doubt, be very familiar with. Evidently, it doesn't even vaguely look like the original image - which begs the question whether there is any point even trying to preserve it.

Is It Worth Preserving? , by avec art on Aug 7, 2020 10:09:14 GMT 1, I definitely think it's worth preserving, even though it's in a bad state. I think it should be restored to it's former glory by someone with proven record of successfully using spray paint.

Is It Worth Preserving? , by John The Badgers on Aug 7, 2020 11:08:31 GMT 1, Definitely worth preserving Peted, I know a lot on here against this, but for people to enjoy Mr B's work in the future, no down sides as far as I can see.
This one in particular, as Cosmic mentioned with the tenners, did actually search it out on a weekend to London last year.

Is It Worth Preserving? , by avec art on Aug 8, 2020 13:52:21 GMT 1, what preacher say's is a valid point. But there is also another way to look at this, that we're not talking about your average street art here. The chances for most people to enjoy Banksy work is limited, so preserving it broadens how many can enjoy the work in person. Many great masterpieces have been touched up and buildings outright rebuilt.
If it had to be repainted from scratch, I'd suggest no. But the original painting is still there, albeit a little faint, but this makes an accurate restoration a lot more feasible. In that case you could arguably remove the horrible plexiglass. Stick a cctv camera on it ... the irony is not lost on me :/

Is It Worth Preserving? , by verylittlehelps on Aug 8, 2020 19:33:05 GMT 1, Definitely preserve. Not sure about restoring - I like seeing it aged and just thinking 'Banksy stood here and did this'. Wouldnt be the same thinking 'Banksy stood here and did this and then another artist tried to retouch it'.

I agree with this also. There are a few ways to look at it, two are below:
1. Leave as is and see a weathered image that has been untouched since Banksy originally done it. It loses some of the meaning possibly and may not be much to look at. Great for nostalgia though.
2. Touch up properly using original colours and be accurate. These will retain the meaning and will be great to look at, but not seeing the original paint etc. will lose some of the attachment to the original time and piece.
I know a lot of people feel street pieces should be left alone to naturally age or be covered by other art. However, think of the excitement of seeing a Haring, Hambleton, Dondi or Basquiat that has been protected in its original location. It would be like a time machine. (The Haring mural in Amsterdam springs to mind, although unintentionally preserved as far as I know.)
I think it depends on who would be seeing the art though. General tourists may prefer touched up fresh images, Banksy fans maybe the age untouched pieces.
On another note I wonder how many hidden Banksy's there are covered by plasterboard and hoardings etc.

Im of the opposite opinion It’s past it’s best Getting someone to restore it would be like painting it again That’s the beauty of street art to me it doesn’t always last
I agree with you preacher. Take off the awful Perspex cover. Let it fade.

What’s the point of it’s current condition?
What will the point be when it’s completely gone?
Preserving a moldy old wall for what?

Totally agree with this. If he'd wanted it to last forever he would have produced it that way.let it die with dignity.
