A few things have been starting to pop up for the fall auctions. I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Jose Parla's that went up at Christies today. 30x40 watercolor failed to hit the reserve, low estimate ยฃ4000 Aren't these about $10,000 usd retail?
Also a ceramic failed to sell at ยฃ2k low estimate. And a Rostarr failed to sell.
Wish I had the money to buy a Joe Bradley couple years ago. $36k now, not looking too likely for me anymore...
My favorite figure painter, jenny saville was the star of this auction$250k

Christie's Art Auctions , by lee3 on Sept 16, 2010 20:50:04 GMT 1, That's a pretty nice Parla & I'm surprised it didn't sell at that number but September is an off month anyway and one rolls the dice putting anything to auction this month. I saw a Kate AP sold for 30 at Sotheby's which also featured a Picasso multiple that I've always adored, Bacchanale avec chevreau et spectateur for 50k or about half of what it commanded a couple years ago.

It's not bad but it's really not that special either. And what you're saying about September may have some validity but it's not as though a seller of a ยฃ4k parla has the weight to throw around to get it placed in premier Oct/Nov auction either. The seller was lucky to get it in there to begin with if you ask me. I've submitted work to sell at Christie's a few times and never got anything in.
There used to be rumors on this forum about these kinds of watercolors going for $20k on the secondary market. Oh how things have changed.

Unless they happen to be the owner of a well known gallery and are disposing of a number of pieces in the same auction.

Christie's Art Auctions , by Sacked... on Oct 1, 2010 16:07:00 GMT 1, News: Royal College of Art Auction at Christie's to Raise Money for Battersea Campus The Royal College of Art has announced that the fine art auction house Christieโs is to handle the sale of works donated by major artists associated with the College.
RCA alumni, staff and honorands including David Hockney, Tracey Emin, Frank Auerbach, Paula Rego and the Estate of RB Kitaj have each donated an artwork to raise funds for the third and final phase of the Collegeโs campus in Battersea, south west London.
Taking place at Christieโs, King Street at 2pm on 15 October, the Royal College of Art Auction will be one of the highlights in a series of art events happening between 10 and 17 October, a week when the international art world will gather in the capital for a showcase of exhibitions and sales, including the Frieze Art Fair. For more information about the sale, please see Christie's website.
The College has embarked on the major expansion in order to maintain and build upon its position at the forefront of postgraduate art and design education.
The Sackler Building formed Phase One of the new campus, which is to eventually occupy almost 4,500 sqm on Howie Street, Battersea. This first phase saw the redevelopment of a former warehouse to provide accommodation for the RCA Painting department and its sixty students. Designed by architects Haworth Tompkins, it opened in November 2009 to critical acclaim and won a RIBA Award in May 2010.
Construction of Phase Two, the Dyson Building, is taking place between 2010 and 2012. This will house the Fine Art departments of printmaking and photography as well as a large column-free gallery, a state-of-the-art lecture theatre, conference facilities and incubator units for start-up designers.
The Third Phase with an overall completion date of 2014, will house the Applied Art departments of ceramics and glass, goldsmithing, silversmithing, metalwork and jewellery.
The new Battersea campus will provide students with access to modern facilities to modern facilities which will best support and benefit their education and artistic development. The buildings will also provide accommodation for start-up units for new businesses in the fields of art and design.

Jose Parla 30x40s are currently priced at $15,000.
snausages, it is clear from your post (and numerous archived posts) that you are not a fan of Jose Parla or his art. Your main points appear to be that the retail pricing of Parla's art is too high and that he is not known within "major" art circles or galleries. You have stated and restated your perspective, so I cannot help but wonder what you are trying to accomplish by continuing your critiques? Personally, I do not feel similarly compelled to attack artists whose works I don't like (or prices I don't agree with). I read these forums to stay informed about urban/street art/artists, and Jose Parla is an important and innovative artist within the genre.

Damn right he is. I love parla. But you can pick up second hand work for cheaper than retail. Never understood how quick his work jumped in price.

Christie's Art Auctions , by snausages on Oct 3, 2010 0:31:10 GMT 1, I see you've done your homework. Yes I've said all those things. My point in mentioning this though is because I thought people might be interested in leaving an aftersale offer for these โ I thought you might be able to get one for under 4k which yes I think is much fairer price than retail. After learning the consignor is a gallery though it is probably less likely you'll be able to negotiate. And since you bring it up, yes I think Parla (and most artists in this scene) still retail for too much โ but I actually don't think I've harped on about this much recently. Buy what you want blow as much cash as you want, I just don't care enough to get involved anymore.
