Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by lee3 on Oct 17, 2008 19:33:03 GMT 1, I'm back and sad the Hodgkin passed. His work seems to move in waves up and down price wise and i thought that piece was a beauty. Certainly a very strong start all things considered though the big lots are yet to come. Maybe people trust tangibles more than anything else at the moment?

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by raiden on Oct 17, 2008 19:40:46 GMT 1, Sort of a half empty, half full moment right now.... Hirst sold at the low end of estimate when you consider the published price includes the buyers premium and the Warhol 'Skulls' sold way below estimate. (which really are the two best Urban market bell weathers that have come up at this point.)
On the flip side, pieces that don't really reflect the Urban art market have sold above estimate.

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by lee3 on Oct 17, 2008 19:46:33 GMT 1, nothing really taking out the high estimates but a lot of stuff selling. imo, many of these estimates are very agressive so i'm not surprised nor would i say the mkt is cooling. 10 skulls for $7.5m = $750k per painting and these have been in a $600- $1.2m range per painting for about 2 years now. Nothing earth shattering but nowhere near the amount of buy ins i was concerned about.

Did you expect inflation and record breaking prices in this sale? The fact that stuff is selling at these prices means the market is resilient in the face of extreme adversity.

IMO there's going to be an element of people wondering where their money is safe - stock market, no, banks, maybe no - art, maybe yes - and even if not, it's pretty!

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by raiden on Oct 17, 2008 19:53:28 GMT 1, So far 7 of 36 did not sell. For whatever reason, it won't let me pull the lots that did not sell - it just skips listing those numbers in the list if you'll notice. Cheeky.
Urban art bell weathers are doing lackluster. Albeit, the auction is going slightly better than I expected.
