Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by Daniel Silk on Nov 10, 2009 18:21:34 GMT 1, For us poor voyeuristic art freaks it would be it would be nice to play rich for night. There's a incredible private collection of contemporary art going up Nov 11. Really nice variety. I love the two hundred dollar painting by Warhol, the torso sculpt by De Kooning, and a particularly nice minimalist painting by Jasper Johns but I think my fav is the unique neon light created by a guy I'm not familiar with at all Bruce Nauman. check out the video... www.sothebys.com/video/privateview/N08592/index.html
Another BIG auction on tomorrow

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by lee3 on Nov 12, 2009 4:46:55 GMT 1, That 200 dollar bills just made Sotheby's 4th quarter I'm sure. Shocking to see just a couple lots later that '67 self portrait from the cupboard bring in over 6 million with a 1-1.5 estimate. Sotheby's is leaving every house in the dust. I don't think i recall a 22 inch '67 self portrait ever bringing in even 4 million but that one looked gorgeous and obviously had no sun damage. Just 8 months ago there was a gorgeous lot of 3 12inch/30cm square Fright Wigs that sold for a hair over $1m. Whoever picked those up in the February London Sotheby's sale is opening a bit of champagne this evening. I must say there was A LOT of wonderful art auctioned off today and it pains me not to be absent from NYC for the fun. Some gorgeous Dubuffet's near the end of this evenings sale too and only 2 lots bought in- the rush to flee cash for tangibles looks to be returning quickly.

Bit sad really IMO...

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by lee3 on Jan 25, 2010 23:01:56 GMT 1, Yes, it's a Sotheby's thread and given that I brought Christie's into the mix above, time for PdP. There is some intersting work including a Warhol knives painting that I would be stunned to see hammer anywhere near the low estimate. Some nice Basquiat's in the auctions too and I'll confess digging the Gillian Carnegie "Brunette" work though knowing little about the artist. Anyway, given this board there is one piece (lot 19) of particular interest in the evening sale:
I can't link from PdP's site so just googled Vandalised Oil #001 from 2001 which is estimated at 60-80k GBP (~$100-130k). If memory serves (which it often doesn't) this was double the range but failed to find a buyer at Dreweatts previously. Obviously given the photo above it went under the hammer somewhere in the past. Interesting indeed if in fact this was the pioneering effort from Banksy's Vandalized oils.

Sotheby's Art Auctions β’ LONDON π¬π§, by lee3 on Jan 26, 2010 23:45:41 GMT 1, >>>According to my notes, it failed to sell at Β£140000 at that auction<<<
The one or two Dreweatts auctions that I paid any attention to had every unsold big ticket item top out one step below the low estimate which suggest to me that most if not all were chandelier bids. I wouldn't put much stock into that 140k bid. However, I like the estimate range for this piece at PdP and would not be surprised given what's going on with this artist at the moment to see it exceed the high estimate.
