Framing/mounting advice urgently needed, by bumix on Sept 2, 2020 19:02:31 GMT 1, Happy to be able to tap into the wealth of wisdom in this great forum!
Last week I bought a rare hand painted multiple for 3k, archival framed incl shipment. Fews days after the purchase the gallery shared concerns from their framers that the mounting board may slip from the backing board during transport. They suggested to add a second mounting board and glue the board distant board with strong acid-containing (non archival) tape to the backboard. This would enable to still have the print archival mounted to the first floart board and allow easy removal/reframing if necessary.
Could you still call this archival framing since it has acid-tape in there but its not touching the print? Would this lower the value of the print in any way? The framers didnt come up with an archival yet strong solution for this 76x110cm piece - should you have any advice or suggestion, please shoot!
Thx and take care

Framing/mounting advice urgently needed, by iamzero on Sept 2, 2020 19:06:04 GMT 1, I canโt see why that would be a problem. No more than using an MDF or Hardboard backing board which strictly speaking isnโt archival.

Framing/mounting advice urgently needed, by eyectopus on Sept 2, 2020 19:24:46 GMT 1, I know it is not an answer to your question but when going to this effort it may have been easier to have the work removed from the frame and shipped that way. Either with or without the frame. Without the frame has advantages such as ease of shipping and to see if the framing has damaged the print.
If the frame is a must have then the print could be flat packed and shipped with the frame. It could them be put together by a local framer or even yourself.

Framing/mounting advice urgently needed, by bumix on Sept 2, 2020 19:44:12 GMT 1, Thanks both of you for the quick thoughts! Much appreciated!
I already paid for the frame, so I would want it. Just wanted to know if using acid-containing tape for the backing would be an issue (gases getting in the frames climate, archival designation, ...). In that case I could get it shipped attached to the mounting board by archival tape with the frame on the side and ask a local framer to tape it to the backing by archival tape. Downside is that the gallery doesnt want to pay for that. A bit disappointed that they sold it to me archival framed and now say they cannot ship it that way only after I paid. I feel this should be their responsibility....

I'm guessing it's under glass too. I'd want to have the print out in case the glass breaks.

Framing/mounting advice urgently needed, by bumix on Sept 3, 2020 6:49:55 GMT 1, Its acrylic so from that end it should be OK. Will check with some framers today how much it would be putting it back together.....

Framing/mounting advice urgently needed, by bumix on Sept 9, 2020 21:42:37 GMT 1, Would be great if anyone with expertise in framing could share her/his thoughts. No offense to framers being asked by a gallery for a cheap transient job - but this doesnt sound like an archival job to me. MDF is already not great but using Non archival PVC to mount the float board to the backing concerns me. While I have idea about framing I studied chemistry for some time and guess acid can travel..... ...happy to hear comments

Framing/mounting advice urgently needed, by racket on Sept 9, 2020 22:48:12 GMT 1, Many framers use mdf backboard, but using corner bumpers will allow for air circulation. Matt/mount should ideally be 100% cotton rag board which comes in more limited colours, rather than just conservation/'acid free'. Mount with mylar corners/Japanese mulberry + starch/water-activated gummed tape (eg hayaku), rather than something that requires solvent to fully reverse. Self-adhesive, pressure - sensitive tape is a no.

Thanks so much for the timely and detailed response. Although the material are not ideal, would this still qualify as archival mounting? Do I understand correctly that the tape used to mount the work is not OK? They said it can easily be unmounted without leaving damage with a bit if water. And last, could a solvent-based tape (not acid-free) be OK for mounting the board to the back? It wouldnt touch the artwork as there would be 2 doubled up mount boards in between? Or would acid travel or gassing damage the work?
