DFace ๐ฌ๐ง D*Dog โข Street Art โข Print Release News, by Howard Johnson on Jul 2, 2015 22:25:42 GMT 1, Count me in, one of my favorites from the LA show. Heres hoping well see a bit of a deviation from the Lichtenstein stuff in his next body of work. His art seems to be be the best when he ventures outside his comfort zone.

DFace ๐ฌ๐ง D*Dog โข Street Art โข Print Release News, by Poly Mindset on Jul 2, 2015 22:31:55 GMT 1, Does it? I never really got D*Face's work. Isn't it just kind of like a spin off of Lichtenstein's comic book stuff? I always wonder why people wouldn't just buy a Lichtenstein, at least it's semi-original and imo much better in the classic sense. Even some of Pose's work is heavily influenced by Lichtenstein but in the case of Pose at least there is much more originality in comparison to D*Face. Some things I guess I'll just never understand. Though it has made me go back and appreciate studying the history of art and especially the founding fathers of pop art like Lichtenstein.

Good luck to everyone trying to grab one, small edition!

DFace ๐ฌ๐ง D*Dog โข Street Art โข Print Release News, by davievegas on Jul 2, 2015 23:12:05 GMT 1, The direction of older artists seem to be trending backwards imo. Could be the money they are making allows them to not care as much since they sell out anyway. Dfaces older work was the best. pop tarts, dead icons, superman etc. Now it seems his newer work has less thought and details in his images. You see it with other artists like brainwash re-using old images and whatson as well. Tagging old images. I have been more into newer artists these days unfortunately. Even Nick Walkers latest stuff has been lacking. Only the future will tell the value of these guys. I would even say kaws newest sets of images were un appealing to me. I don't see it going in the right direction as of now from a collectors stand point.

DFace ๐ฌ๐ง D*Dog โข Street Art โข Print Release News, by Howard Johnson on Jul 2, 2015 23:59:21 GMT 1, What I don't get is his continued use of the dot pattern. It keeps his works tied to Lichtenstein which does him a disservice in terms of lasting importance. I fear that this body of work will be seen as a "Lichtenstein homage" instead of just great urban-pop art. Take this image for example, one could interpret it as a comment on the hyper-masculine context in which soldiers find themselves, willing to sacrifice life and limb in service of eliminating some meaningless target (a context in which the zombie motif actually makes sense!). Those with a knowledge of art history will see the nod to "Bratatat!," which touched on similar themes. But the inclusion of the dot pattern makes it an on-the-face Lichtenstein homage taking away some of the power of the image and execution which is really all his own.

However, I would argue that its less of a spin off of Lichtenstein and more of a critique. A lot of Lichtenstein's work (and pop art in general) can be interpreted as a glorification of western culture. D*face takes the motif and turns it on its head to provide a modern comment on these institutions. "Kiss of death" and "Sweet Nothings" are decidedly feminist interpretations on the oppression a women can face in a traditional relationship, and "Pop Tart" is equally effective at deconstructing the empty facade of celbrity idolization. (I realize that sentence is smug as hell).

It just seems to me that his work lacks originality. There are others doing similar work as well. Look at Denial or Greg Gossel, they use comic book imagery in their work too. Perhaps it's just me but when I see works like these I can't help but feel it's all been done before. But to all of you who enjoy it, well that's cool I guess. Art is very subjective, so buy what you like and enjoy it.
