Ebay collecting state tax on prints, by cest on Sept 12, 2020 22:09:47 GMT 1, Soo, I just bought a print on ebay, and it appears since last year, ebay started collecting taxes for prints.
I always assumed since taxes were paid on the original purchase, eBay was exempt from having to collect.
Also, I have not noticed if auction houses have started this in the us?

just had the same about 20mins ago on an ebay purchase from the us, ebay tagged the tax on at checkout, never had that before

i get taxes being paid on new stuff but even the used stuff is taxed

It’s seen as a sale of goods. Do people still have to pay taxes when they buy a used car from a dealership?
I agree with you in principle, but I guess states are going to try capturing as much revenue as possible. States have passed laws requiring online marketplaces to collect sales tax on behalf of their sellers and this began a while back.

Ebay collecting state tax on prints, by pjc on Sept 13, 2020 5:19:45 GMT 1, The interesting thing is that people/Ebay are not only collecting the ‘state’ portion of the sales tax, but also the local/county/city portion... I’m in US, and the ‘state’ portion of our sales tax is 7% and the local/county/city portion is 1.5% so it’s not just the state portion being collected, but also the local/county/city tax being collected as well....

They are illegally collecting taxes on 100% of these non taxable transactions.
I have called to complain on several occasions, all to no avail.
