there's a difference with a flea stall in Notting Hill making a few bob off the tourists and making 'semi' official t-shirts, organising exhibitions (in his name), charging door entry etc. not exactly copyright reasons, but people making large on his reputation.

Take away all the tat , fake merchandise , wcp prints , unofficial shows etc leaves little to the general public to engage with , the market as is , is out of reach of the general public also if they do produce prints it is not affordable to the general public and only to VIP circles .keeps the brand alive as is and free publicity

Agreed, and even more importantly, he doesn't want the public charged to view things that at his own shows are free, feel ripped of by a small/bad show, or for them to be under the illusion that bad merchandise is official.

we’ve been through this before, but if he genuinely wanted to boost his brand or his coffers, why would he not just release new prints en masse ?

Answer to that is clear. Keep existing prices high.

Banksy fans when he sells out and starts suing for copyright infringement.

People believe it's official merchandise?

Come on.

Guess they also think that enhanced Monet oil at the National Gallery of Art is a real Monet too.

 Selling exhibitions advertised and promoted by dealers as non commercial ventures. Sell merchandise to make a profit. They of all people should know about copyright and piracy.

  They often play clever with words in advertising and let the public believe what they want to believe.

 Next time there is one of these Banksy art exhibitions, ask to speak to the organisers and ask them in a loud voice if the merchandise is official sanctioned by Banksy or unofficial and don't be surprised to get no answer or shown the door.

  and other words of wisdom from Banksy, now it looks like there is some hypocrisy involved as Banksy has gone from graffiti vandal to a world wide brand.

 Banksy has not always been factual or true in some of his slogans and statements made on walls.

It appears to be the sort of stuff that armchair anarchists like the sound of without bothering to look into the actual logic or meaning.

   Maybe there is no Banksy, it's just a brand and the art on walls over recent years just a viral advertising campaign by some suits or hipsters behind the brand.

  

In the Sotheby's blurb it says 2003, Banksy was part owner of POW until 2018.

 According to UK company rules, any person with significant control, over 25%, name has to be declared.

The UK companies house website doesn't show anyone leaving in 2018 and shows Mark Chambers as having significant control since 2016.

  Maybe Banksy was an employee or maybe there never was a Banksy for many years.

Saw this shirt on sale at Saks Fifth Avenue- an upscale US department store for $48.00. 

Cheap street knock offs are one thing but if  expensive clothing companies are using his work to sell in legit stores- I see why he is pissed.
