What’s the best £1k can buy right now?, by gd79 on Oct 17, 2020 10:16:20 GMT 1, The obvious answer is buy something (or some things) you like. That's dull though. You have two choices:
- Buy something small from a 'brand artist'. I mean small in value terms of course - a signed poster (eg the Emin neon ones), an unsigned poster / print, a book that includes a good print (this works very well for photography - most artists have plenty of 'special edition' books with a signed print)
- Buy something substantial from a lower tier artist. A limited, signed print. An original from a local artist. This is often more rewarding, but don't expect a monetary return!
Also keep your eyes open. Sometimes high profile galleries stick out stuff on their shop front. The best thing I have on my wall is a damaged photograph that I paid £250 for. The damage is not visible unless you are close. Undamaged, it would be a £10k photo.
Other than that, the most impressive thing I have on my wall, framed, for less than a grand is a large, high quality litho from Siam's Guy. Great images, printed up by idem (JR's print house)

Hadn’t heard of Nadia, that’s a great shout.

This is just an opinion and generally what I like from estabished artists in the scene. As you are asking I guess you are looking for advice on investing, which is a decision you need to make yourself and do your homework as nothing is a sure fire bet (even banksy).

What’s the best £1k can buy right now?, by minibear on Oct 17, 2020 11:32:04 GMT 1, I simply cant agree with anyone recommending a poster/somewhat mass produced item by an artist, whether it's Banksy or otherwise. Those were 2, 5 or 10 GBP at one point a few years ago and at 1k GBP, there's so much original art to be bought (or at the very least signed screen prints), like pellets 's suggestion of several (not even one) original works by a legend such as SEEN Also, STIK and Invader works (originals/screen prints) cannot be found at 1k Edit to add my suggestions: personally, I'm always looking at artists with a clear art education, and I would spent the 1k on either Borondo, SWOON, DALeast, ROA or HERAKUT (just a couple of names that come up for me) Borondo is awesome, I really enjoyed his Rexromae show in 2015. Managed to help a few forumites too with signed show books and prints too if I remember. DALeast I've been hit and miss with personally. Wholly respect his talent.

What’s the best £1k can buy right now?, by minibear on Oct 17, 2020 11:33:17 GMT 1, I like the Harland Miller York posters. Paper and print quality is very good and the image is really nice. Price c350. I think you're right with this one. Something I'd actually hang and could be a good investment if ever in the future. Was there any kind of provenance to be had with these? I'd be keen at c£350 if there's one on the boards.

ANIMAL was awesome, yea. I saw it before the opening actually, while it was being built. Wish I picked up one (or two) of the little scratch glass pieces.
Would be a good investment of the 1k

I would image they are difficult to reproduce compared to say the Banksy posters referred to

What’s the best £1k can buy right now?, by rodgro on Oct 17, 2020 18:16:53 GMT 1, A little bit lazy I know, but thought it would be a good way to get an idea of what good art there is on the market for me right now. Feel free to DM and please include pictures.
Are you looking for art or an investment? If the latter suggest you buy a stock, bond, etc. if it’s art you’re after than look around on social media, etc and decide what YOU like rather than asking someone what/who you should like. The idea of friends coming over to my home and asking about a piece of art I have hanging and my response is “I don’t know...I bought this piece because someone told me to” is a bit nauseating. Just my 2 cents.

What’s the best £1k can buy right now?, by Lord Lucas Roham on Oct 17, 2020 19:35:34 GMT 1, I know it's been said a zillion times before but...buy what you like. If you buy something just because you think it will increase in value in the future then buy gold instead, or play the stock market.
Sorry but this is the biggest myth in the art business and doesn’t ring true in 2020. It's hollow and meaningless unless you're either loaded or naive.
If you want to make money from art then all you really need is some patience.

Asking the question has encouraged DM’s with forumites offering what they would part with for £1k. That was the point.
