Advice for a clueless owner please!, by sadiesays on Oct 26, 2020 22:36:57 GMT 1, So my husband bought several prints back in the day before banksy was huge. Some signed, some not. We sold 3 that we had doubles of years ago as we were skint. The rest we put up in the loft in an art folder bar one which we framed, thinking we had maxed out value wise and would one day get round to getting them framed.
We called an online dealer on a whim the other day and he advised us to contact pest control and upload photos as a first step. On removing the only framed print some skinning (?) has occurred to the back. A thin piece has peeled back. It hasnโt affected the front. I assume this will decrease the overall value, anyone have a steer on how much so?
All the others are in good condition as far as I can tell.
Any advice on selling also appreciated. I assume that an auction house is the best way to go?

Advice for a clueless owner please!, by Love Is In The Air on Oct 26, 2020 22:56:15 GMT 1, Hi Sadie, in terms of recent sale prices at auction to start you off, this website is a pretty good indicator:
www.banksy-value.com/index.php
There are quite a few threads on here about auction sales versus private sales versus consigning prints to a gallery to sell the prints for you(whilst taking commission). I will let other more experienced people advise you on this and no doubt you will also get messages from people here offering to buy your prints now!
Whatever Banksy prints you have, if some are signed and in good condition, you can expect a nice surprise in terms of what they are now worth.
Good luck with the sales!

Thank you so much for the response! The art broker I spoke to gave me some numbers that I actually canโt get my head around to be honest. Insane!

Advice for a clueless owner please!, by coller on Oct 26, 2020 23:05:06 GMT 1, I recommend you post the names of the prints you own. Be sure to not post the edition numbers.
The Banksy Value website that another member posted is a good resource, but it may not accurately reflect the value of your prints due to a lack of auction results or other reasons.

Yes this is a good point, don't think there is any harm you naming the prints you own here but NOT the numbers! If they are rare prints doing this will lead to you getting dozens of messages/offers too!

Thank you, I really appreciate this advice. I have contacted a couple of brokers was planning on seeing what they say before sharing what I have. Iโm not clear on the process for private sales so I figured Iโd wait for the response from pest control and the brokers then maybe post here. Iโm very thankful for you telling me what not to post!

Advice for a clueless owner please!, by zacksz 123123 on Oct 27, 2020 0:55:25 GMT 1, Iโd say to not worry about damages and just get your Pest Control in order for now.
Looking at past auctions (most recent) many of the sales have had some pretty damaged pieces but it seems that people are not reading condition reports anymore for banksy stuff.
Just make sure to get market value instead of giving these to an art broker, banksy stuff sells by itself.

Advice for a clueless owner please!, by hibster on Oct 27, 2020 9:32:32 GMT 1, you may also want to look at getting them insured - they will be worth a lot as am sure you are finding out
capital gains tax will be payable, so best to only sell one a tax year to take advantage of your allowance - if they are owned by both you & your husband you can use your joint allowance (doubles the amount you can knock off the profit before tax comes in
in the meantime get them out of the loft & get a portfolio to keep them in with some acid free paper to protect them, keep them out of sunlight & flat any that you have framed look at replacing the glass with uv glass to prevent fading

Advice for a clueless owner please!, by stillborncrisps on Oct 27, 2020 10:45:26 GMT 1, Bear in mind getting authentication from Pest Control will usually take some months, some people have had to wait up to a year. Some of the recent auction houses have sold with COA pending (Certificate of Authentification) so you might be able to sell some quickly that way.
If possible it's probably best not to store them in the loft. The extremes of temperature (v hot in summer, v cold in winter and at night) are likely not to be having a good effect on the paper. Also, a leaky roof could see the whole lot ruined. That said, if you've got kids/pets they may be safer in the loft! Kitchens and bathrooms are also not good places due to high humidity. Are they in a portfolio, or still in tubes? Get some good quality white cotton art-handling gloves before touching any of the prints.
If you want to insure them you probably need a special art policy, due to value. They'll likely totally exceed your home and contents providers' max limit. I've just gone with Brownhill Insurance. They'll insure in blocks of ยฃ50k, (eg ยฃ150k, ยฃ200k, etc) for the total worth you have, and you have to name any that are above ยฃ50k (use www.banksy-value.com as a guide). They didn't make me get a burglar alarm, and the prices are covered by a future 20% increase which given the current rising prices might need a review in 6 months. Expect to pay ยฃ500-ยฃ1k for this sort of insurance. You also need to tell your main insurer all of this and get them to put in writing that they're happy the art is insured with another provider and won't try and class you as being double-insured or being an undisclosed high-value risk for if you ever have to make a claim.
Finally, take your time, ask loads of questions here. You're probably wise not to list them here, even though we're all dying to know your booty, you'll just attract a slew of begging msgs from hawks asking you to sell. You being a noob I'd steer clear of dealing privately with anyone - your inbox is probably already stuffed full of amazing offers just from this post. There are good people, but not all, and it's tricky enough as it is - experienced forum members have been caught out and it's a lot to lose these days. That being said, let us know who you're thinking of dealing with as there are a few shyster brokers, galleries and auction houses who are well known to long-standing members here, and we can guide.

As said above, get the COA's if you can, take them down from the loft, check them over. Keep them safe and don't tell anyone locally about your find, do that once you've got shot of them.
