Harland Miller Sale or Swap , by kosh on Oct 29, 2020 14:10:47 GMT 1, Hi Forum,
I was incredibly lucky in being allocated a have WHO CARES WINS 2020 edition.
I would like to either sell it or swap it for another Harland Miller Penguin or the Thought After Filthy Thought .
I have been told the Who Cares Wins recently sold at auction for £20,000 ?
Please let me know if you have a swap in mind or want to make an offer ?

Harland Miller Sale or Swap , by Poster Bob on Oct 29, 2020 14:23:17 GMT 1, It sold for £18,000 including premium but not all in (tax not incl.) at Tate Ward.
Two were on Ebay for £20,000 and then taken down. I'd assume they sold.
There has been one on Ebay for £20,000 for nearly a month which has yet to sell. I presume that this is because the seller refuses to take offers.
There are three available on Artsy from the following galleries: Rhodes; Thou Art; and Extraordinary Objects. Pop Fine Art Appears to have sold one via Artsy.
If I were you I'd wait until the spring when distinguished auction houses will list them. The price should jump considerably (I'd say at least 25%), the available copies will be purchased, and you'll have a more valuable item. Give it time to appreciate.

Wow, it is 5years !!! There’s a fair amount of animosity on here at times so I remember thinking it was all a bit too much ? I was a newbie to the art game and as such felt a bit overwhelmed to be honest?
One good thing from this forum though was I managed to purchase a beautiful Damien Hirst Mickey at a great price so I mustn’t be too critical I suppose?

Is there a sign up list? you had to register with the gallery a few months ago and if you were quick enough you might have gotten one. Alternatively if you were VIP enough you just got allocated one.

Harland Miller Sale or Swap , by kosh on Jan 16, 2021 10:48:46 GMT 1, Hi Forum members,
I’ve finally decided to sell my Harland Who Cares Wins (2020)
I know the insightful and incredibly knowledgeable Posterbob thinks it’s a bad move to sell now as it’s value will surely increase but needs must. Sorry Bob
I’m based in London and would ideally prefer a face to face dealing but understand this is not always possible particularly under lockdown. I can arrange postage via an art specialist should you so desire obviously at the buyers expense.
£20,000 is my asking price which is I believe the cheapest price you’ll find this at ? Please let me know if that’s incorrect. It is still in its White Cube packaging, never removed and is therefore pristine.
Thank you for reading,
Stay safe please,
K

Good morning Winter,
I’ve just been sent a private message consisting of a list of art that you’ve ‘flipped’ considerably quicker than the 9 months that I’ve owned this ? I hate to label people hypocrites and as I wish to keep this thread polite and peaceful I kindly ask that you please refrain from starting off on a negative tone.
Enjoy your weekend

Sorry Winter I’m not into squabbling nor the wish to embarrass you when a simple history search will suffice?
I honestly wish you a happy weekend.
Stay positive if possible but please stay safe.

Harland Miller Sale or Swap , by rosac on Jan 16, 2021 12:53:12 GMT 1, A few people on here are extremely frustrated with whitecubes poor management of this CHARITY release, and their so called VIPs
Like others I missed out, and I intended on hanging this piece on my wall. So much so that I offered white cube a sizeable charity donation on top of the purchase price in an attempt to secure this. I assume my email was not even read, if it was then I think it’s truly terrible of them not to allocate me one.
Instead I’m found having to pay a flipper so they can personally pocket 15k profit on a CHARITY release in a matter of months.

Agreed - I personally know a 'vip' who was allocated 2 of these pre-sale, no questions asked. Don't blame them at all - both prints have been kept and not flipped as far as I know, but I suspect a sizable % of the overall edition was allocated like this. Suppose it's up to WC to decide how to manage sales, but there was a lot of publicity at the time around the charity aspect which leaves a bit of a sour taste in hindsight.....

Harland Miller Sale or Swap , by kosh on Jan 16, 2021 13:19:36 GMT 1, Oh Winter,
Please check out the thread people. The person posting it had no qualms being called a flipper, he even stated such. I actually purchased their Damien Hirst Mickey for £10,000 but forcibly had to sell it for £28,500 a few years later to pay off debts. Is that regarded as a flip or a good investment ?
The reason I left this forum shortly in 2015 (?) was because of the nonsense spouted by some. I’m sorry Winter but I’ve been nothing but cordial to your messages so please go troll on a website that permits such childish behaviour as I believe it’s not warranted here.
Once again enjoy your weekend

Harland Miller Sale or Swap , by teabaggins on Jan 16, 2021 17:14:44 GMT 1, I find it so incredible odd that people still come on to UAA of all places, where even the founder posts eBay links to flips, and then are suddenly flabbergasted by the first thought someone selling their own property in a time frame not deemed appropriate by a random unknown keyboard warrior. And then people jump on the bandwagon! If you are so disgusted with flips this probably isn’t the place for you anymore. The times they have changed.
GLWTS OP.

Instead I’m found having to pay a flipper so they can personally pocket 15k profit on a CHARITY release in a matter of months. I respect your view, and I would like to present a counter-view. White Cube’s management of this charity release achieved its end goal faster and slicker than most charity releases last year. Can you remember the Counter Editions charity portfolio? Or the HELP portfolio from Jealous? These are still knocking around unsold from source. Which doesn’t help their respective charities. For White Cube it was a ‘charity’ release for a worthy cause, not a ‘charitable’ release for collectors. I missed out too...and like you would have framed and hung this; but having been in the scene a little while, I can reassure you the next must-have print release is just around the corner. So save your money. Resellers will have their reasons for selling. Let them try. If enough of us just moved on to the next great piece of art without paying £15k profit for them, then reselling won’t be so attractive and will gradually become less of an issue to the person buying to hang and enjoy.
WC could have sold this edition 5x over. They were just lazy with selecting their buyers. I guarantee they didn’t read my email. Anyway like you I won’t be paying up out of principle.

Harland Miller Sale or Swap , by John The Badgers on Jan 16, 2021 20:08:07 GMT 1, No offence to Kosh, and wish him all the best with the sale of this lovely print, but the thing that rankles me is the fact that this print was for charity?
I know an old topic, and understand who now owns this item now, but just feel when selling items like this there could be some kind of kick back to the initial cause, especially bearing in mind the profit involved here? Surely bearing in mind the cause this was aimed at, not too much too ask?
As mentioned Kosh, sorry to derail your sales thread, not something I typically would do, and all the best with selling this lovely item.

Harland Miller Sale or Swap , by Horatio Nelson on Jan 16, 2021 21:28:33 GMT 1, Somewhat idealistically, I take the bigger picture view here. If someone generates personal wealth (even through flipping), then they should be better placed to do a host of things including charitable giving thanks to that capital gain.
Playing devils advocate, but it could be argued that someone who has already made a purchase which has benefitted charity is under a lesser obligation to pay proceeds from their onwards sale to that same charity, than, say, someone who makes £5k (or much more) from selling an appreciating asset such as property that never benefitted charity in the first place.
Extreme example, say a gallery like Maddox makes £20k gross profit from selling one of these, someone like Jay Rutland (particularly in conjunction with his wife) has probably given more to healthcare charities than anyone on this board (even if there are 1,001 things to dislike about Maddox for other reasons). So it’s not always that black and white as to what people do with sale proceeds.
If it’s permissible to rant further, the NHS probably wouldn’t need as much charitable support if people paid taxes where due, such as CGT on profits from selling their art subject of course to the annual allowances and reliefs etc (which, from what you read on here, doesn’t seem to be something many agree with).
Anyway, GLWS kosh, and we trust you to manage your charitable giving as you see fit like a competent adult...
