For us, it's about bringing art out of institutions, challenging the cultural hegemony, placing work in local communities and hopefully, through workshops and education programs, inspiring others to do the same. It's a little shining light in an otherwise fucked up world. Yes, prints are part of it, and of course there are bottom feeding parasites like yourself who buy to flip, (pretty much every thread of yours is a flip), and yes, we understand this is a way to build from 50 quid prints to 500 quid prints and hopefully a few canvas down the line, who knows maybe you really do like some of the values and ethics exspoused in the work you flip but you need the extra cash. But honestly, don't "project" your own money grubbing self interest onto others who may, in fact do, have other reasons they're involved in this fascinating dynamic new movement in grass roots visual art culture. PS : The Nuart boxset worked out at 50 quid a print, that's Sandra, Futura, Martin Whatson, Martha Cooper, Isaac Cordal, Dotdotdot, for 50 quid. Hardly a money grubbing exercise now is it hey. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. PPS : We really do value everyone who supports both the gallery and the festival for whatever reason, but if it's for any of the reasons above, we value you a little bit more. Peace. As previously stated, I bought the set because there were 3 prints I wanted. 2 of them not listed for sale anywhere...ebay, ebeans, any gallery I could find. My only option was to buy the whole set (which included 12 prints I didn't want.) I knew I'd be able to cover the additional cost by selling the ones I don't care for. Real simple for you: Was forced to buy this to get the ones I want. Sold what I don't to cover price difference. Get off your high horse and go f*ck yourself mate.

I think the real value in this print is the perspective it provides on US militarism and the country's position in the current world order from an artist that left the first wave of graffiti to serve in the US military and then returned to be a key figure in the Golden Age of NY graffiti. That isn't affected by the number of prints produced and personally I think money just obscures the true value. Just my 2c worth.

I would just add that I have a great deal of respect for Nuart and all they have given to this scene.
The moment it becomes just about money, I'm out.

Anyone helping put this show and sale together should be appreciated for their contributions, as well as the added insight we're granted by these 'insiders ' willing to take the time to comment openly here.

I guess if you regard everyone involved in the culture as little individual micro businesses whose sole aim is self interest and to profit as much as you can from the culture, then yes, it would be against those ethics.

The film documents the 1960s and 1970s gang culture of the Bronx and how hip hop evolved out of that environment, or at least the three elements of hop hop other than graffiti. The documentary includes lots of first hand interviews including with Afrika Bambaataa and DJ Kool Herc, as well as many of the gang members themselves. The documentary is available here and there's a trailer below:
