I have always unterstood that this painting was one of four pieces commissioned by Tokion from four artists (Barry McGee, Shepard Fairey, Perks and Kaws) around 1999 to paste-up the posters in a few major cities.
I have always undersood this painting was made to make posters. None of the posters were on sale at that time if I remember correctly, but I also remember to have seen pasters on walls...I will try to find the pictures.
I would be very surprised that all posters from this image are fakes (except if Tokion was not authorised by Kaws?) Now, I also believe fakes have been made.
I actually have a set of the four posters that I bought many years ago. I actually don't know if they are official or not, as I have heard so many contradictory stories about this. But more details would be appreciated.

The Futura show is designed as a pop up show in LA. I have had a sneeky look at the artwork at the show, some sold already to BIG investors / top players in the scene.
Futura's famous pointman design are in the show, but most have sold out. He wont be doing any more pointman designed work ever again, so its best to buy now or you wont be able to again.
The prints... well they will be available, but very a very low edition. again... once they are sold thats it of the 3 designs.
oh yes, there might be a turd on your print tube when you buy as a free gift if you are lucky.
basically, you got no hope of getting the work, unless you are known.. very well known.
