Influences in the art world, by jimmy81 on Nov 15, 2020 19:14:10 GMT 1, Hello,
I want to express my discomfort to see published a photograph of a collector with 3 identical pieces (changes color) by Edga Plans.
I am a follower of Edgar but when I saw this the day he published it, my disappointment was maximum.
He also comments on his instagram (Deleted all comments) that it is the fault of the company that managed the sale but from my point of view he would also have to manage part of the process.
He announces that in 2021 a new figure will come out that I think I will no longer buy.
I think I'm not the only one who thinks like this. Can you give your opinion?

Influences in the art world, by Arty Farty 15 on Nov 16, 2020 12:01:01 GMT 1, Can’t believe any of you are getting hung up over this. They are literally child’s toys. If anyone came round and saw them on my shelf, all art credibility will go out of the window. I really think people have lost sight of urban and contemporary art and what looks good - just cos it’s hyped by a few french kids.

You could say the same thing about the artwork.
More importantly, Never worry about others think.

Exactly - there are loads more sensible things to buy like door mats, plates, book slip cases and face masks. These people need to grow up!

Influences in the art world, by Asteroid on Nov 16, 2020 18:01:16 GMT 1, I would say that the majority of successful urban art (with a few exceptions) has political overtones, which is why Banksy took the world by storm.
Toys even if designed by popular contemporary artists, are still that - toys.
A plate is also still a plate, not something that I would have on my wall, it has a very 1970/80s feel which reminds me of Franklin Mint. At least with the recent Artist Plate Project it is supporting the homeless.
The doormat in reference by Banksy has emotion literally embedded within the piece. It cannot be compared to anything Edgar Plans has ever produced. In fact, the majority of recent artists listed on this website are pure tripe, and will not have the longevity of the old skool POW coalition.
The recent spate of artists on this site, I see are for pump and dump purposes - for investment, buy strong visually pleasing images with meaning.

Some Artists are like sportsman, with a certain early retirement age. They need to 'make hay, while the sun shines'. Even they know that they have a limited lifespan in this industry, so I congratulate the ones that have the foresight to produce as much work as possible, with as many colours/editions as possible. If there is demand from collectors to buy, why not produce as much as you can?

Influences in the art world, by jimmy81 on Nov 17, 2020 11:52:25 GMT 1, I agree that they produce as much as they can but do not say "Only 1 per person" or that the pieces go to only wealthy collectors.
I remember the day he put it up for sale, I was in front of the computer to get one ... and when I found the photo of the collector with three pieces, my disappointment was maximum.
By the way said collector already deleted the comment he wrote on instagram.

Influences in the art world, by medichead on Nov 17, 2020 12:26:05 GMT 1, Easily recognisable as @collection_montparnasse. Occasionally he actually seems to buy the odd gem, but mostly garish, uncultured tat at a volume that seems unhealthy even in the context of a high budget.
Three points on this subject: 1) this is a toy, and he's done you a favour by missing out 2) what an incredibly fortunate existence one must enjoy to be upset at missing out on a drop of a toy from a contemporary artist. 3) the perceived scarcity is a very deliberate marketing and branding ploy.

Agreed. The OP and his discomfort really is pathetic and this is a primary example of first world problems.

Influences in the art world, by The Italian One on Nov 17, 2020 15:06:25 GMT 1, Welcome to the reality of the "Oh, I didn't know"... "It was someone else's fault"... "It's a secret lottery"... "No pre-sales (and then you discover 99% of the edition is gone already". Unfortunately this is how some artists and galleries are deciding to proceed at the moment. Also some collectors are not even smart enough to hide it (or they don't give a damn). After 2 weeks you can see pictures on IG of the usual handful of collectors with the edition, or even multiples of the same edition - when it was "Only 1 per customer". It's not surprising news. Establish a good relationship (aka buy a lot) from a gallery / artist and you'll have some extra chances of getting new editions. case closed!
