Maggi Hambling's Mary Wollstonecraft Sculpture, by tran16 on Nov 22, 2020 12:25:56 GMT 1, This piece has been on the news a fair bit recently. It's attracting a lot of visitors as everything is closed. It's just down the road from me so I've been to see it a few times. Thumbs down from me.

Interested to hear why you think it's brilliant?

Maggi Hambling's Mary Wollstonecraft Sculpture, by bernard on Nov 22, 2020 22:57:46 GMT 1, I like it too. For me, it's about representing all women and by showing the naked female figure you celebrate that wholeheartedly without sexualising the female form by covering the bits considered socially unacceptable to expose. In the hey day of statues (the greco-roman period) heroic men were almost always depicted naked so I see this as a nod to those depictions of power too. I also like the scale which (my interpretation) nods to the idea that women don't need to be big and showy to be powerful...

Maggi Hambling's Mary Wollstonecraft Sculpture, by macfuton on Nov 23, 2020 0:19:54 GMT 1, By being a tiny, nude mannequin?
I'm not seeing it.
Celebrating a brilliant individual and women in totality with a meek representation? Not for me.
It says nothing of the person who's named. And it says little of the movements implied.
£150k for this? Hard, but I'm not convinced it would be well received by the inspirational subject. Feels lazy to me. Pish.

Maggi Hambling's Mary Wollstonecraft Sculpture, by barrychuckle on Nov 23, 2020 11:46:44 GMT 1, I don't understand why the figure is naked, regardless of if it's Wollstonecraft or not. But, more importantly, I don't really understand the main bulk of the statue either, which seems to be nothing more than a badly formed blob. I'm going to see it before I form an opinion but from the photos I quite like it, but maybe part of that is because Hambling is such a cool lady.
The 'blob' I've heard is more sensuous and looks like amorphous feminine shapes meant to represent the female form and that it represents the many strong women who came before Wollstonecraft. Standing on the shoulder of giants as it were.
Why is she naked? Yeah I get the arguments either way. There seems to be a lot of knee jerk Daily Mail headlines virtue-signalling that the naked form is anti-feminist. That if it was a famous male person it wouldn't be nude. Whereas the feminist artists I do know seem to stand with Hambling, the female form has been seen once or twice before in art... largely because it's beautiful... but there's also a defiance to her.

Maggi Hambling's Mary Wollstonecraft Sculpture, by mojo on Nov 23, 2020 15:48:36 GMT 1, I haven't been to see it yet in the flesh, so to speak, although I think Maggi Hambling is an excellent choice of artist to create a statue to represent and recognise the work of Mary Wollstonecraft, a women that as far back as 1792 spoke out for equality and women's rights to education that often resulted in her being ostracised from a very misogynist society. I read it as a modern interpretation of a women in all her glory riding the wave of freedoms that are now afforded to her because people like Mary Wollstonecraft spoke out as far back as 1792.
There is also a lot to be said for it being 'controversial' as it is now being discussed all over the TV, Press and even on here. Had it have been a standard bronze statue of an old lady called Mary Wollstonecraft sitting in an armchair reading a book called 'A Vindication of the Rights of Woman' we probably wouldn't even be hearing about it and certainly wouldn't remember seeing it.

Maggi Hambling's Mary Wollstonecraft Sculpture, by baal on Nov 23, 2020 18:53:31 GMT 1, I haven't seen it myself only pictures, but like she said it's supposed to represent all women. I'll reserve my judgement at the moment. Coincidentally I have just bought a Maggi Hambling print. It is a screenprint of the painting she did of Derek Jarman. A really beautiful piece. I don't know how to load photos on here but it was from IAP Arts if anyone wants to check it out.
