they wouldn't be bothered to grab that extra 4% for themselves as well, I guess......

It simply means that the auction house pays an amount if the hammer price is over 1K (euros). Incidentally, does anyone know if the auction house actually pays the artist directly? I doubt it somehow. Surely every auction house doesn't have the bank details of every artist they happen to sell in one of their lots.

Correct - if the auctioneer says it's a Basquiat, and it sells for over the ARR limit, as long as they send off the correct amount of money then the ARR people are happy, the estate of J-MB are happy, and the buyer is none the wiser. I don't know if artists are given breakdowns of exactly what sold and where - I'm assuming not, but if they were then I guess they may be able to flag up a fake sale. Highly unlikely, though. |
