Perfect art heist (lol), by darkarts on Jan 2, 2021 16:30:04 GMT 1, fascinating story!! the comic book rendition also made it 10x better for me! It reminded me of a recent story where some stolen Picasso's were discovered on a yacht. Obviously the person or people with the funds on this must've felt like they hacked the lottery to give themselves the winning numbers!

Perfect art heist (lol), by hellfo on Jan 2, 2021 17:04:01 GMT 1, So let me get this straight. They bought an extremely valuable painting from a London gallery and then they receive an e-mail asking for the payment to be made in to a different account unconnected with the London gallery based on the other side of the world. And they didn't think it was suspicious? Really?
Probably it wasn't unconnected, it was opened with a similar name. It seems the thieves are professionals.

From what I'm reading, they hacked into the actual London gallery's email inbox and sent the transfer request from the legit gallery email address.

This is correct. The modern day Robin Hood managed to access the legit email from the gallery and send the purchaser an email (from the legit email address) with different bank details (based in Hong Kong).

I can't imagine the sinking feeling the sender experienced when they realised what had transpired.

Perfect art heist (lol), by bitola on Jan 3, 2021 1:37:12 GMT 1, 'The modern day Robin Hood' How so bitola? in that Robin Hood robbed from the rich to give to the poor
Correct Atom Gallery, the original Robin Hood robbed from the rich to give to the poor. However, fast forward to 2020/2021, the ‘Modern Day’ Robin Hood has evolved to understand capitalism... no longer having a desire to give to the poor, or in this example, a need to actually steal a physical item (the painting) - the cash is sufficient.
I can now only hope that the children of Hong Kong have even more Balenciaga shoes and off-white backpacks for the coming school year.
