Yes 😅 - had some wire kicking around and added it for extra peace of mind 👍

Not sure it's frowned upon to post numbers but I did get a customs text saying I owe £129. I need to check the actual tracking email AA sent me but I'm in the UK and receiving an Observer. 20%... Shouldn’t it be 5% ?! Not had mine yet...
It should be 5% but not sure what happens if you get charged the wrong tariff. I.e 20% and the courier has already pre-paid on your behalf? Also, if you’re in Uk buying from the EU, presumably now you should not be charged VAT at purchase as it’s added to your import duties no?

Correct, the price paid by someone in the UK at point of sale from an outlet in the EU should now be exclusive of VAT, IVA, or whatever the EU country of origin applies to its prices for sales within the EU.
This isn't so bad for UK buyers if correctly applied as one tax pretty much cancels out the other, though there's still the dreaded handling fees to pay on top.
It's a fuck ton worse if you drink European wine, as Excise Duty has now added a whopping £2.23 to every single bottle, and that's regardless of whether it's a £5 or £50 bottle.
Still, we've got our own world famous UK red wine to drink while we stare in wonder at our blue passports, eh lads.
...The blue passports produced by a French-Dutch company made in Poland!

Paul Insect • The Reflection, Observer , by mrizzle on Jan 21, 2021 14:13:48 GMT 1, So, looking at the FedEx charges, they’re stating £117.44 import tax which is 18% of the total cost plus shipping or 21% of the price of the print (based on today’s currency conversions). They then want a further £12 as a “ Direct Payment Processing Fee.
For others in this position, did you just click the link from the text revived from FedEx and provide payment? Sorry for all the questions but this is a first since these new rules came into play.

However mine arrived today without an invoice and I have not paid the charges. I guess a letter will come in the post shortly telling me to pay that same amount.

I’m always cautious with these sorts of links coming in that manner but, on clicking on it and then verifying the linked tracking details of it and consignment against those emailed, everything matched up so I paid it. I do intend on trying to claim back however.

Paul Insect • The Reflection, Observer , by mrizzle on Feb 2, 2021 18:31:55 GMT 1, Seems like the best place to post this in case it is helpful to others. I contacted Avant Arte to query the custom charge applied because FedEx have failed to respond to my initial query. Avant Arte had applied the correct traffic code in the paperwork and I was struggling to see why I had been hit with a bill of £129.44 by FedEx(20% plus a handling fee). To their credit, Avant Arte’s customer service has been excellent and they advised contacting FedEx in the first instance.
After some navigation of the rather dead end automated phone options on FedEx’s customer support line, I finally spoke to someone (after twice not being redirected as promised) and the lady I spoke to advised that I may be able to appeal the charge but that it would cost me a flat fee of £53 to do so. This would mean that, in reality, after this charge, I’d stand to recover only £26.94. Out of principle I was going to do it. FedEx suggested that the issue was probably that Avant Arte hadn’t clearly stated the nature of the item on the flight paperwork as well as the invoice and that this can lead to customs disputing the item as paperwork is seen to not match. I relayed this to Avant Arte in case it is helpful for future reference.
I have now returned home from a walk to find myself in receipt of a paper invoice from FedEx for a fee of £41.36 (5% and handling fee) but no balance due which there wouldn’t be as they’ve already had £129.44 off me. I’m now off a further call with FedEx and they’ve agreed that they need to reimburse me £88.08. I share this because I think there will be others in a similar position. The error lies entirely with FedEx and I suspect that they’re automatically generating a flat 20% invoice charge on items. There is no paperwork required from you for the purposes of claiming this figure back should you be in a similar position so please do phone them and recover your money.

Paul Insect • The Reflection, Observer , by Dahmer on Feb 3, 2021 12:22:51 GMT 1, Seems like the best place to post this in case it is helpful to others. Im assuming you are UK based and avant arte is EU? Ive been trying to figure out what the VAT rate is for importing art from EU to the UK and the UK gov website is more of a mess than usual. I know it used to be 5 percent but does anyone have a link to where it states the actual rules now? Getting frustated at inability to find the right website / information. Every time i search i find the same article about a woman who got stung by buying an expensive coat

Dahmer, sorry, yes I’m U.K. based and Avant Arte ships from The Netherlands.
The tariff codes and rules around art seem to be deliberately difficult to interpret but the import duty seems to vary depending on the nature of the art. For example, a hand pulled screenprint produced by the artist or a handmade sculpture would be eligible for duty at 5%. However, if the production of the screenprint was automated then it would (as I understand it) be eligible for duty at 20%.
“2. For the purposes of heading 9702, the expression ‘original engravings, prints and lithographs’ means impressions produced directly, in black and white or in colour, of one or of several plates wholly executed by hand by the artist, irrespective of the process or of the material employed by him, but not including any mechanical or photomechanical process.“
The codes related to art can be found here and good luck: www.trade-tariff.service.gov.uk/chapters/97.
There are others who are quite well informed about this who may be able to weigh in. Perhaps if you could advise what it is you’re looking to send them someone might be able to help suggest the relevant tariff code.
Christian Avant Arte posted earlier in this thread and his comments might be helpful:
“ This is what i've had from 2 V reputable shippers:
5% for prints made by artists, 5% for HF works by artists (including sculpture), 5% for sculptures under the edition size of 10, 20% for sculpture editions over 10 (unless HF) Then all works on paper/originals etc would be 5% 12:56 But realistically, and this is the BIG BUT, the import officer who reads the description will be the one who decides the classification and then the corresponding %. With editions it is unbelievably hazy. So there could be instances where people are undercharged, or overcharged, but we can argue on their behalf and query the decision, just takes a lot of time and energy. We should just be keeping our product description as accurate as we have and use the above tariff if client's ask.”

Fair play to you for appealing against the charges, but £53 for the appeal🙄 Is that even legal?
