R.I.P DON LEICHT, by Reader on Jan 26, 2021 10:52:00 GMT 1,
R.I.P Don Leicht aka The Original Space Invader and long time collaborative partner to John Fekner. Don sadly passed away on 22/01. Don inhabited the center of what was also a very marginalised group of South Bronx artists working out of Fashion Moda in the late 70's and early 80's. One of the few none graffiti based artists that participated in the now legendary "Post Graffiti" exhibition at the Sydney Janis Gallery in 1984 alongside the likes of Haring, Basquiat, Crash, Daze and Rammellzee amongst others.

Rest in peace Don Leicht. The original Space Invader.
Don Leicht (1946-2021), was a visual artist, painter, and sculptor who worked in New York for more than forty years. Considered one of the pioneers of the urban art movement, he began working with John Fekner at PS1 / MOMA in 1976, sharing a studio with him ever since. In 1982, Fekner and Leitch began a series of works and installations using steel, cut metal, aluminum and automotive paints based on Nishikado's game Space Invaders with the statement: 'YOUR SPACE HAS BEEN INVADED': Our children are waging a terrible war , millions of families are being brought to the battle screen. The project that lasts to date is a critique and reflection on the control and manipulation exercised by the media in the social space of our families and our lives. The project was presented in 1982 at the Fashion Moda gallery, founded by Stefan Eins in 1978, a gallery that is most frequently associated with graffiti art and street art through figures such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, John Fekner , Jenny Holzer, Crash or Leicht himself among others. Don Leicht along with his regular collaborator John Fekner was not only the first to reinterpret and bring to art the pixelated aesthetics of the famous arcade video games, but also left us with a multitude of works of a social and political nature for more than 40 years, many of them also made with his inseparable friend and collaborator John Fekner, one of the fundamental and most important artists of street art.
