FAKES, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Jan 27, 2021 21:48:43 GMT 1, Good morning guys (and Dan Silk)
Not sure if it's the correct way to cover this, but maybe now we need under the main navigation a 'FAKES' section. Just thinking it's becoming apparent that more fakes are getting reported. We got the Tate Ward investigation with Banksy posters and Warhol's, the Welsh guy forging GDP items etc. As it stands these threads get lost quickly as so many new threads appear on the forum daily.
There is big money to be made, it is only going to increase with criminals out there printing on their new big printers. Many prints bought and shown here are made on same printers and we all know the only artist with safe authenticity process is bansky. No one else does!
A lot of us older members you would like to think are clued up and won't get stung 😉. It just keeps everything in one place and new members would welcome this section and can ask more questions.
Thoughts?

FAKES, by samfrost on Jan 27, 2021 21:53:00 GMT 1, Agree. Would be good to have a fake thread and tips to avoid fakes for the noobs. With more capital flowing into art and all things collectible, a word of caution would be helpful for many.

FAKES, by Guy Denning on Jan 27, 2021 21:56:38 GMT 1, I think the key point to bear in mind is that scams are usually attractive to the potential mark because the deal always seems to be too good to be true. That's when the lights should start flashing. Admittedly it's not always the case - but the credible excuse or reason for sale is usually just the worm on the hook. And if it's big wedge prices you have to ask yourself why whatever's being hawked isn't going though the usual channels.

FAKES, by reg on Jan 27, 2021 22:38:16 GMT 1, Seems that people might not realise they have a fake till they come to sell. Certainly with bigger artists and pieces that have inflated in value it becomes a problem. Finding out that poster you bought outside Santa's Ghetto or wherever 15 years ago for a tenner is a fake isn't a problem if it's still worth a tenner. But when it's worth 10s of 1000s, well little wonder there are people out there looking to make a killing.
As Guy says, let the buyer beware. If it looks like a rat, smells like a rat and priced like a rat then it's probably a fake Banksy.

FAKES, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Jan 28, 2021 2:28:14 GMT 1, Good posts guys and I realise UK still in bed so perhaps more will have a say later in the day. It will be annoying doesn't matter how it's laid out I think, but at least it will be covered in one section.
I was going to add a poll, but any shady members will be casting dodgy votes.
It's just a thought which I feel could be beneficial long term and ultimately it will be Dan's decision.

FAKES, by Dive Jedi on Jan 28, 2021 18:38:04 GMT 1, So let me share my story of today. I was rather chuffed to have scored a Bristol Museum Dorothy poster last weeks in an auction ( no, not Tate Ward).
I asked the seller if he had the original tube, but he didn't since he bought it at auction himself.
So today I received it. And inmediately noticed something was of.....
These posters are on rather thick paper. And this was not. Luckily I have an original Riot Copper, which I bought myself directly from POW. So I had an OG to compare.
Not only was the paper much thicker on the original. Also the triangle mark in the lower left corner is much less sharp on the fake one. Probably because it's a scan of the real thing and then printed again. So you quite see if it's an OG or not.
Hope this helps. Be careful out there.
Seller will send me a full refund. Auction house cancelled the deal. I do think the seller was dealing in good faith, since he was very forthcoming resolving this. So no harm done, except for my shipping costs, which I will book under "lesson learned".

FAKES, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Jan 28, 2021 21:34:54 GMT 1, Glad all is resolved mate, there's probably so many cases like this out there and lots of fakes already on walls. Looks like we won't have a section for these, Dan Silk hasn't got involved, but good if everyone keeps posting and updating current threads.
