What is “After Banksy”, by germ215 on Feb 24, 2021 21:41:10 GMT 1, I’ve been seeing some pretty shoddy looking “Banksy” stencils on canvas being sold recently under the name “After Banksy”. They come with some sort of COA, but not pest control. They are also listed on legit places like Artsy. I can’t find much information about what these pieces are. It caught my attention when I saw someone trying to sell a few on Instagram as legit Banksy’s for around $2k a piece. Can anyone please explain to me what these are. I’m assuming they are just bad knock offs.

I was just trying to understand what they were since they are being listed on Artsy and sold by “reputable” galleries. I wasn’t sure if I just wasn’t in on something. But I guess it’s a way to sell knock offs and high prices to people who don’t know any better.

What is “After Banksy”, by LJCal on Feb 24, 2021 23:09:21 GMT 1, Tbf technically Peckham Rocks, and a lot of POW prints are after Banksy originals and not original prints. After means a copy of a work, it can be authorised and even signed by the original artist, or it can be unauthorised which is a polite way of saying fake, the works you are referring to are the latter.

And yes these could be signed. For example, Banksy could ask another printing company to make a print run of one of his older original paintings. Banksy would check the quality of the work, sign it off and approve it for sale by another organisation or whatever. He could even sign those items and they could also be numbered.
Banksy - Things like Soup Can Posters that were directly produced by Banksy / Pictures on Walls and sold by them are actually 'Banksy', just as much as the limited edition prints. Also, the Walled Off stuff can be classed as 'Banksy' as they are designed by him and sold through his hotel.
Grey areas as to whether Banksy or 'After Banksy' - Things like the Bristol Museum Posters - these were produced for his official show but sold through the museum

Not Banksy or 'After' Banksy - Anything that has a Banksy Image but is not approved by the artist - that is just tat that anyone can do. For example, the greeting card company that he is in dispute with and all the ebay sellers that try to con people!
That's my take on it, if anyone has a different idea.......
