Art, Morals & Money...Be nice! , by veetee on Feb 26, 2021 21:20:16 GMT 1, Ok, Likely to start a fire topic. I was looking at the news today. As we kind of knew already, a US intelligence report finds Saudi Crown Prince responsible for approving operation that killed Khashoggi in 2018. An awful - yet not surprising - for certain countries act against freedom of speech and journalism. here: www.cnn.com/2021/02/26/politics/biden-administration-khashoggi-report/index.htmlNow, many of you probably know that Shepard Fairey is having a big massive solo show in Dubai in March. Knowing that SF has always declared he fought for, sold art etc with big political and moral themes etc. and I believe in the true spirit of the man himself, don't you think it's a bit of a nonsense going for a big solo show in a country where those values (and other against women, LGBT community etc) are completely trashed and actually made illegal? Am I overthinking this? Should I feel a bit "betrayed"? I guess it's all for money, considering Dubai. What do you think? I know, it's 2021 and the world spins around money etc etc, but if you are a promoter of certain values and you made them your logo, shouldn't be supporting them at 100% and avoid promotion in certain locations? It's a bit like selling art against Trump and then having a solo show in Mar-a-Lago... Be nice & kind to each other...it's just to chit chat..
Dubai isn’t Saudi Arabia though...even as a comparison Saudi is much stricter

Art, Morals & Money...Be nice! , by rockbeer on Feb 26, 2021 21:34:23 GMT 1, Saudi is not part of the UAE, and while there are significant problems in both, it seems a stretch to conflate the two for the purposes of your discussion. Are you suggesting SF should boyott Dubai based on the actions of a different country? Maybe he should boycott Dubai over what China is doing to the Uighurs – it would make as much sense.
I suggest maybe you might do some research before firestarting. At least that way you can make sure your arguments have some credibility. You'll get flamed anyway, but getting flamed for your ignorance of your own topic isn't a great look.

Art, Morals & Money...Be nice! , by Sebastian Dusseldorf on Feb 26, 2021 21:35:41 GMT 1, As I wrote above I think he would need to send a strong message to justify that trip. But than again, I wouldn't judge him too hard anyway, as most in his country couldn't even tell UAE from Saudi Arabia. 😉

Art, Morals & Money...Be nice! , by Ravnur 2020 on Feb 26, 2021 21:38:18 GMT 1, I think you are raising some very interesting points. If he gets freedom to exhibit whatever he wants and uses the opportunity to shine a light on the things mentioned above, then I think it is maybe good thing he has an exhibition there. If he has to accept censorship etc etc then don’t think it is right. Of course as mentioned Saudi is not UAE and should not be mixed up.

Art, Morals & Money...Be nice! , by argylepaul on Feb 27, 2021 8:57:08 GMT 1, IMO: That's one of the problems with radical, group thought: From Marx himself to the latter-day supper clubs of Islington: turning a blind eye to something that should be cause for concern, and which opens this thought up to hypocrisy.
