Franck Le Feuvre and Jonathan Roze are pleased to welcome Adam Neate, Mr Jago, Ralph Steadman, Shok-1 and Sickboy for this second exhibition dedicated to the English scene.
Born in 1936, Ralph Steadman, will show his work in France for the first time. Co-creator of the famous character who inspired the even more famous Raoul Duke played on the screen by Johnny Depp in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Ralph Steadman always diversified his activities. Back in the 70โs, he created the Gonzo Journalism with his American long-time partner and friend Hunter S. Thompson. Then he started to draw for important magazines and newspapers such as The Independant, The New York Observer, Daily Telegraph or Rolling Stone. In the latter he published, with Thompson, the โseriesโ titled Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas which was then published as a novel and adapted for film by director Terry Gilliam.
In the mid-80โs while he started to collaborate with an important wine and liquor company, Steadman pursued his diversification and published books going from an acclaimed Sigmund Freud biography to books for children. He will also be invited to work on a special portrait collection for Breaking Bad, while designing theatre sets and operas or working for animal defense.
This freethinker is of course the perfect illustration of the Gonzo Journalismโs mantra he initiated: you do not cover a story, you become the story. As a matter of fact, Steadman became a part of history, or at least of history of art and journalism. In 2012, a biopic has been dedicated to him. Called For No Good Reason, the movie explores the career and activism of Ralph Steadman, starring one of Ralphโs friend, Johnny Depp.
The UK Collective #2 will also be the occasion for the gallery to present for the first time works by Adam Neate and Shok-1. Neate lives and works in Sรฃo Paulo. He is known for his multidimensional portraits in which emotion in conveyed by the energy of lines and the use โ subtle or sharp โ of colour. The second, Shok-1, is also an international figure of urban art, street art. Shok-1 is pioneer of X-Ray Art. Scientist, Shok-1 holds a degree in Applied Chemistry. In the streets, he creates monumental murals impressing by their dimensions but above all by the technique Shok-1 uses. Without using any tape or stencil, he paints X-Ray like murals giving each time his interpretation of our societyโs health status: sometimes pathological, sometime healthy.
Last but not least, Mr Jago and Sickboy are both used to exhibit in Paris but we did not see their work at the gallery for a few years now. The two talented artists from the infamous Bristol street art scene are completing this quintet. Trained illustrator, Mr Jago now works on an abstract representations of nature and cosmos. Year after year, the outlines of his figures disappeared for the benefit of energetic touches of paint. Oil also came to replace acrylic and gave more material and depth to his paintings. Sickboy also took advantage of those past years to developed new techniques. By mixing printing, airbrush, acrylic and more, he immerses us in his abundant universe, sometimes humorous, sometimes squeaky and from times to times, a little bit disturbing.
