NFT Vs Real art, by Humble Art Collector on Mar 2, 2021 3:33:01 GMT 1, Argh so smart!!! I should have added that option. I apologized. Was more meant to illustrate the point not to specifically call out and artist or particular piece of art. But "Neither" should have been included.

NFT Vs Real art, by Bodega Cat on Mar 2, 2021 17:43:59 GMT 1, Makes sense for the digital file to be worth more. The print can always be torn apart / reprinted, but the original file is forever. One could theoretically print an edition of XXX once you own the NFT.

I disagree
Your hard disk may crash, your account be hacked or a lot more of digital problems you can have. Print? The same as you can take pictures of a print and reprint. Not valid imho. Am I getting old by choosing real ink and paper?

NFT Vs Real art, by Ravnur 2020 on Mar 2, 2021 18:53:37 GMT 1, Would prefer hardcopy rather than a file of an image.
I like the idea that there is only one and you cannot reprint it. Makes me look better after it and appreciate it more. Also, given that you have to really look after works on paper and canvas I like to think it makes me think more carefully before buying and only buy what I intend to put on the wall (with regular failure :-))
That said I love video, animation, performance, VR etc etc art that you cannot really frame and stick on the wall, but have to enjoy in the moment.
Given how many files and photos I have lost through IT crashes, format changes, hardware changes I think it would be bound to end in tears.
Good discussion!
cheers

Look I think its weird too but you gotta think about the youth who are growing up in a very different world than you or I. The idea is its decentralized so who cares if your hard drive crashes - it always exists in the blockchain (internet). The only real risk you run is losing your password like the stories of those dudes who have millions of $$ in bitcoin from years back but cant remember their password.
For something like a print it makes sense because you have full ownership. You can use that PNG for whatever you'd like. Put the image on a mug. Fuck it. I guess to some people that's more valuable. (I'm not saying I fall in this category but I'm just trying to see it from their POV.) Its a bit different for an original piece though thats painted. You can't exactly replicate that after even after owning the digital aspect of it. In that case I think the NFT becomes the equivalent of a COA but instead of losing it within a stack of papers it just now exists in your virtual wallet (same as your iphone wallet for example).

From the moment you say I’m getting old I can’t respect your opinion anymore...
Now, seriously, I understand what you say. The mug or the shirt are not valid points of view, you can do it now with any important artist. Download and print
I also understand youth goes through a different path. But that doesn’t mean that all technological path is the future. Some may last, others don’t. And I really think it’s not the way for art. I don’t believe that NFT will ever substitute physical pieces, or download files to print your statues in your home 3D printer... the hand of the artist is there. Why most of us prefer litho or screenprint instead of digital print? Think about it
BUT... I must say I saw a NFT I would have bought if I had funds. Maybe it’s still on sale, or will finish soon. It’s a Vhils explosion. It has movement, so ideally should be displayed on a screen. I would like to hang a screen dedicated to that work. And THAT can only be shown through a different way of understanding things. In fact I’m having an idea now...
So, I don’t give an answer (there are no simple answers) but more questions and doubts. Helpful, right? 😂😂

NFT Vs Real art, by Humble Art Collector on Mar 3, 2021 6:38:43 GMT 1, My point in all of this is you have 2 options buying the digital print of his original planning sketch with its accompanying blockchain (the print is simply a giclee print of a small forma) or you can own the original painting (what the sketch was made for). The painting literally has hundreds of hours in it. More detail. More finesse. Materials. And different skills that go beyond the tools (procreate) provides. If you look at the painting above and the sketch there is a TON more detail in the painting especially in the execution of the camo. I think the NFT model could be a great way to distribute editions, prevent flipping, control multiple purchases, etc. But I think selling inferior works to the original only diminishes the artists reputation and people will feel burned.

NFT Vs Real art, by Humble Art Collector on Mar 3, 2021 15:54:15 GMT 1, I agree about the sketchy part. Also sketchy is one of the other paintings was bought by WHISBE the artists and a friend of his. Separately, whisbe also did a drop of 10 but retained 1/10 of all versions so he really only put 9 up. Maybe he used his own "NFT" earrings to buy to keep it in the eco system.

NFT Vs Real art, by jimmyjam on Mar 4, 2021 6:11:41 GMT 1, NFT has so many billionaire tech players behind the scenes trying to make this into something.
These billionaires are going try and make it seem like artists and collectors can make a lot of money right now - easily. It's a scam to try and get people onto this system. At the end this will end up like everything else where it will get oversaturated or larger artists will get involved and the system just becomes like everything else, meantime the major financial players in the background who already have billions will gain even more billions and bail from it. Or it crashes but the major players already got out.
This will all crash at some point - but for the next year or so these billionaires will pore billions of $$$$ into this system to try and make artists - like LUSH - feel important and try to draw more artists and collectors who don't typically make this type of money. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of these big resell numbers are done by these investors in the back trying to make this into something right now.
I've started to notice a lot of these NFT pieces on NFTY gateway are now reselling for cost or less as more artists are getting involved. It seems like they are trying to make a media story out of some of these artists to gain attention right now. Many collectors on the site are trying to resell them for insane prices but the pieces just sit there. It seems like these large secondary market prices are just there to attract attention and that's it.

NFT Vs Real art, by Humble Art Collector on Mar 4, 2021 16:03:05 GMT 1, Technically NO. The artists retains the copy right of a work unless they transfer it to you. However you can take a photograph of it and change it to make it an original work. Museums do this all the time. I do not know exactly how much you have to change but I think it is something like 20%. Most museums add a border, add their name to the bottom, and other details. This makes it a unique work. Not unlike what many of the pop-artists do when they use famous characters. They change enough to make it unique and not a copy. I am not a legal expert so you would have to look everything up. In general I do not suggest doing this as it is not in the spirit of supporting artists.

I've been long term crypto investor and long since made my fair share however NFTs in there current incarnation are nothing but a Ponzi scheme promoted by the usual two bit grass smoking celebs who also promote THC and diet plans. In short, I'm out.
