Cyril Power - Matriarchy (1931), by sandworm on Mar 11, 2021 21:53:30 GMT 1, Firstly I am new around here so apologies if such a post breaches any forum rules or etiquette as this isn't strictly urban art, however, I am a big fan of Cyril Power (1872-1951) who in my opinion we owe a-lot, there are elements of his style and technique in so many contemporary artists.
I recently was lucky enough to purchase my first piece of his work at Auction (Rosebery's London) "Matriarchy" which is an edition of 50. These prints are held in the likes of the British Museum, V&A, MOMA etc. My print is actually in better condition than the ones in all of the above.
Personally I believe I got a real steal paying just over £2,000 but as an amateur collector I am now doubting myself of what I've missed or perhaps I really did just get lucky. These pieces rarely come on the market and when they do fetch in excess of £6,000 for this particular print. Some of his more famous works generate much greater figures.
I am keen to hear your thoughts:
a) What you think of the piece? b) Have I missed something, here is the text description from the original auction listing "Cyril Edward Power, . British 1872-1951- . . Matriarchy, c.1931; . . linocut in colour on tissue, signed, titled, numbered 7 and inscribed EP in pencil, from the edition of 50, image 25.5 x 36cm (framed) (ARR)"

Cyril Power - Matriarchy (1931), by Cocteau 101 on Mar 11, 2021 22:04:12 GMT 1, Hi, it's a lovely work. It is printed on tissue paper I believe. A unique variant in red outside of the edition of 50 sold at Sothebys in September 2020 for £3276.00. What was the provenance for the piece, print studio, previous ownership etc.

Cyril Power - Matriarchy (1931), by sandworm on Mar 11, 2021 22:12:26 GMT 1, Nice to hear that other people appreciate his work.
They didn't provide many provenance details other than it was in a private collection which I gather is a bit of a black hole as can't trace a huge amount from there.
The only thing I have noticed is that mine is only signed in one location, perhaps as it's an artists proof, those in the actual edition are signed both top and bottom as the work can be hung in both orientations as the image is fully mirrored.

Cyril Power - Matriarchy (1931), by Hubble Bubble on Mar 11, 2021 22:14:11 GMT 1, I love his work. I’d do more digging on the provenance but if it’s good, you got a good deal.

Cyril Power - Matriarchy (1931), by Cocteau 101 on Mar 11, 2021 22:14:35 GMT 1, A google search will illustrate the different colour variations of the print. Not sure that each is an edition of 50. Ring the Redfern Gallery they will be able to confirm.

Cyril Power - Matriarchy (1931), by sandworm on Mar 11, 2021 22:15:52 GMT 1, Yes, I saw this one it does seem heavily discoloured / stained.
I do have a subscription to Mutualart and checked all previous auction results prior to purchasing this piece, have to say that my one seems particularly well kept / looked after which I'm very happy about.

Cyril Power - Matriarchy (1931), by Cocteau 101 on Mar 11, 2021 22:23:11 GMT 1, Yes it looks an excellent piece. Ring the Redfern or submit an email I'm sure they will be able to give you the full information of the variants but most of all hang it and enjoy it. I'd be proud to have that on my walls.

Ring the Redfern Gallery they will be able to confirm. I have his catalog of works, it seems to suggest 50 total. However I think that the yellow ochre, cobalt blue is the only colour variation which is editioned all the other colour variations are E.P / artists proofs so I guess he was just figuring out what colours he liked / wanted to use for it.
Not sure if this makes the fact mine is technically a unique artists proof more valuable or less valuable than the edition. Any idea?

Cyril Power - Matriarchy (1931), by Cocteau 101 on Mar 11, 2021 22:30:26 GMT 1, Difficult to say I suppose it all depends on demand which I think would be quite specialist with an interest in interwar artists. It's a strong graphic image though it's a bit difficult to tell from the picture the exact colour.

Cyril Power - Matriarchy (1931), by Cocteau 101 on Mar 11, 2021 22:32:09 GMT 1, I'd also consider having it reframed so you can see the full extent of the print and also to ensure that the mount has not caused any damage. In my view it would suit floating.

Cyril Power - Matriarchy (1931), by sandworm on Mar 11, 2021 22:38:07 GMT 1, Thanks for the advice, I agree in regard to the framing and having the print floating.
At the end of the day I bought the piece because I like it not because of its value, however, for both insurance and piece of mind that I didn't overpay I always like to have some idea on the perceived value of the works in my collection.
