Laminated Banksy, by Pipes on Mar 26, 2021 22:25:24 GMT 1, Jeeez.
A lot !!
😂😂😂
Collectors pride their pieces being mint condition.
They frame Banksy’s using fully reversible methods - tape or glue that cause minimal to no effect on the print.
So - lamination is the absolute opposite.

Laminated Banksy, by Snakes on Mar 26, 2021 22:52:42 GMT 1, I knew a guy who used to work on the submarines. He used to have to buy and laminate the saucy magazines for the crew. I heard that they lasted much longer than their non laminated counterparts. Maybe lamination of prints could be the way forward ?

Laminated Banksy, by Terry Fuckwitt on Mar 26, 2021 22:53:30 GMT 1, I'd buy it. Look at all the positives. Can hang it in the bathroom without worrying about humidity stuff damaging it. No foxing. Can't tear it or bend it.
All prints should be laminated as standard imo

Laminated Banksy, by sven on Mar 26, 2021 23:08:06 GMT 1, Unless the COA states this was hand laminated by Banksy himself I’d be quite concerned. Take it to a professional paper conservator and let them work their magic on it.

Prints should be put into a frame filled with resin. Preserved forever

Laminated Banksy, by LJCal on Mar 26, 2021 23:45:06 GMT 1, It will all depend on how it’s been laminated and if it’s caused irreversible damage, if you sell as is without at least an opinion from restorer then a lot. It would in my view be silly not to try and sort this before you offer it for sale (assuming you haven’t already tried), as if it’s a cheap fix and reversible you’d have given away a stack of money. Buyers will mostly assume the worst when it comes to complex or unusual restoration.

It isn't mine , as I stated it is coming up for sale and wondered by how much it would affect the value etc .

Laminated Banksy, by Shoeless on Mar 27, 2021 2:30:23 GMT 1, Depends if you're interested in the image or the 'value'. Art isn't about the cost and the profit that can be made, its about enjoying the images that the artists create. POW stuff from 15 or 20 years ago has been pinned to the wall, rolled up and moved house with and then pinned up again. People displayed and enjoyed the art. That's what it's for. Friday night. Cheers. 🍻
I would much prefer one that has been pinned up or slightly damaged to something that’s been laminated.

Ask for condition report and pictures and send to a paper restorer to see if it can be fixed (and get a costing) then based on this discount what you feel is appropriate for your time and the risk involved (I expect without a physical inspection most restorers will caveat their opinion, so no guarantees). Judging how the market will discount it if it’s an open sale is impossible to say, personally I’d want to see a decent profit (for all the faf) so I’d probably want to net 25% margin after all costs (assuming a reasonable chance it could be restored) but other buyers may take a totally different view and some may take a much smaller discount.

Laminated Banksy, by robo on Mar 27, 2021 9:05:54 GMT 1, Does lamination cover the entire surface of the print in a thick heavy duty glue? I’m sure restorers will have a view, but can’t imagine it’s that easy to remove.

Laminated Banksy, by Charlesworth on Mar 27, 2021 9:38:39 GMT 1, Normally it’s just two pieces of clear thin plastic heated until they bond together around the four edges of the paper. No glue involved in my experience.

No glue involved in my experience. Does lamination cover the entire surface of the print in a thick heavy duty glue? I’m sure restorers will have a view, but can’t imagine it’s that easy to remove. It all depends, wet lamination actually binds the plastic to the paper and the type of adhesive used is more than likely acidic this a problem and probably irreversible, with the likelihood of accelerated paper degradation over time. I believe the process you are referring to is dry lamination which traps the paper in between two pieces of plastic which are bound together with adhesive, heat and pressure around the edges without binding to the paper itself, this offers a much better chance of being reversible albeit creates certain risks to the paper from the heat/pressure used in the laminating process and exposure to non archival adhesive around the edges of the paper. Hopefully close up photos will reveal the process used and a good paper restorer should be able to tell the difference from decent photos.

Laminated Banksy, by LJCal on Mar 27, 2021 10:11:19 GMT 1, If I was a betting man I’d say if it’s in auction laminated it’s probably not an easy fix, the seller and auction house know the impact it will have on value so more likely than not would have tried to reverse it before offering for sale.

Laminated Banksy, by ajr on Mar 27, 2021 10:21:45 GMT 1, You'll be fine. Probably done on a crappy domestic laminator donkeys years ago. Get it restored properly and put it back up for auction. At least get it evaluated by a restorer as the differences involved are huge. Shouldn't cost a fortune and will be well worth the expense. Even if restoration is a couple of grand, you will then get pretty much full price at auction instead of 20-30% less which at these levels will be considerable.

Laminated Banksy, by LJCal on Mar 27, 2021 10:25:55 GMT 1, Please ask why this happened..did someone get a laminator for Christmas? Rich collector Dad gives his ten year old son a laminator for Christmas. Grateful son thought he would help Daddy by laminating some of his collection so started with the a one cent magenta from the stamp collection, then did the Banksy collection and finished up with Oath of a Freeman. Daddy’s in for a lovely surprise.

Rich kids would never do that... they would complain that they got a laminator for Xmas instead of a PS5. Laminator would never be used 😂😂😂
