Still feel pretty bummed. Hard to explain to those outside this community, but Bast was one of the original artists that defined street art to me from the beginning. I know what you mean. But even within this broad community of ours I think thereโs a subset of hardcore Bast obsessives for whom this hits especially hard. To us the man was a genius, plain and simple. I honestly canโt think of anyone in the street art scene whoโs as talented or original. Heโs going to be missed greatly. |

I have loved Bast's work for years. The first time I saw it I got that immediate visceral wow punch to the gut, mixed with a healthy dose of humour and confusion.
I only knew the guy through his art but I think the art world and the world in general has lost someone special.
Still feel pretty bummed. Hard to explain to those outside this community, but Bast was one of the original artists that defined street art to me from the beginning. Yeah I am still feeling pretty sad about this. I have loved Bast's work for years. The majority of the other successful artists operate out of well oiled and well staffed studios. BAST, for the most part, was a solo operation. He did of course do many collabs. But when he was doing his own work it was just him laying the paint on the canvas. He was the one holding the brush. His studio was an organized mess. He was completely focused on creating his art and not so much on operating a business. A visit to his studio often involved Mike pulling the works out and spreading them on the studio floor like carpets. When the studio floor was covered he would walk on the pieces as if walking on carpets, and layer more pieces on top of those works. And he was always looking to challenge himself. There were strange quirky things he would do that didn't make sense, but that seemed so appropriate for him. He told me once he would sometimes puts a stone in his shoe so he felt discomfort as he stood in front of a canvas painting.

I think you're maybe misreading the question, he was asking out of respect, the vast outpouring of grief in our community can look like Bast was a lot more well known than he is. But that wasn't the full extent of his employment at JFK. Here's a little story he once told me of another line of work of his at the airport...
One day, for one reason or another, he was given the job of manually guiding the airplanes to their parking spots after landing.
So there's Basto with those orange or red table tennis-like bats in his hands, guiding a Jumbo across the tarmac when out of the corner of his eye he spots non other than Morrissey stepping out of a private jet a little way away.
A huge Smiths fan, Basto starts yelling "Hey! Morrissey! Morrissey! Morrissey! Morrissey!" whilst excitedly waving his arms in the air, all the while forgetting what he was supposed to be doing, and more importantly, what was in his hands.
Needless to say, he never worked that particular job ever again.

I am very very sad. It is one of my all time favorites. He will definitely be missing.
that finally makes me take care of my mickeys. At least one is always hanging on the wall. But my old plan all 3 (each edition) in a row has so far failed due to the costs of the framing.
But I will finally make up for that.
