A couple of years ago he and Ladj Ly (the guy in the photo) started a flim school in Clichy-Montfermeil where the photo was taken. He also funds a permanent social project, the Casa Amarela, in the favela in Rio where he did some of his famous works. In Paris he also works for a kitchen providing food for refugees, Refetorio. He funds his pro-bono stuff with his own work.
With JR, his art is very much about the process behind it and the encounters it involves, not just the end result.

He likes playful work that people can interact with and I know that since the early days he never liked being put in a box i.e. that his work has to be a certain thing or style...

Maybe in flesh itโs not easy to find the exact place to watch it properly, as he forces a lot perspective to get such an stunning effects, but sure it worths the effort. Unfortunately I was in paris last august/September and tried to see his recent George Floyd work, but after a long long walk it wasnโt already there anymore (Perrotin had an exhibition I would like to go but I had no time enough). Heโs my big miss in urban art.
Maybe sometimes he gets better effects than others, (the Ladj Ly picture is a masterpiece, comparisons with that is a bit tricky)๐, but anyway heโs one of the greatests. No doubt about that
Problem: his art is difficult to capture in a print. Maybe better in a picture than in a print, and we all love prints. (After saying this I must admit I owe a Giants Kikito and itโs one of the favorite pieces in my collection)
And his social work is impressive. During the lockdown he was every day helping people in need

one of the first examples of this was his favela steps work, where he cut a giant photo into tiny strips of different sizes, and stuck these on each individual step in order to create one giant image

JR is a true artist. Not sure why so many knock him and is popularity seems to have been stunted.
He creates beautiful works, has incredible concepts and seems to really ingrained himself in the communities he works.
