As frustrating as it is the flippers are providing a service. If there were NO "flippers" and only collectors, you would never have the chance to obtain art unless it was from primary source. The flipper allows you to purchase the art at market price at that point in time. The best thing that could happen to those that want a limited print is for ONLY flippers to buy it, so the supply side is increased and market pricing will come down. The assumption that if a flipper did not buy a print, that you then would have received that print is marginal at best given the popularity of any large in-demand print.
Although it may feel like a flipper is rubbing salt in your emotional wound after you were not able to obtain something you desire, don't confuse the fact that "flippers" provide a valuable service.
So please, please, stop with the "Flippers are bad" comments everywhere. Look at the larger picture.
This guy is obviously a flipper, taking advantage of his ability to buy this print (or two) with no intention of keeping it (them), but if you actually want to buy this print, you should praise him because that's 2 more prints on the market, which helps drive the cost to acquire one down for you..

I get what you're saying about secondary market and all that, but I disagree (respectfully, I hope) with your final point. The flipper does not produce the print, so if a flipper doesn't buy one, or does, there are the same number of prints in the market. Certainly a collector has no guarantee of buying a print at cost, but if the flipper doesn't buy two, for example, there's a greater chance the collector can get one. If the gallery or artist sells 100 prints to 90 people, as opposed to 100 people, then 10 people missed out at cost.

"dude....."

You are correct that if a flipper does not buy one there is a greater chance that a collector will get one. However with prints that are in high demand the probability of you being that collector are small. There is a much greater probability that you will not obtain the print and have to go to a secondary (flipper) market. In which case it is better for you if more flippers than collectors bought the print because it will be closer to, or below, "cost".
There is no way to avoid the fact that flippers are a good thing. They are simply brokers that create liquidity for an otherwise illiquid asset. I've bought a number of items in my collection from people that have sold art to me that they have owned less than a year.
The problem is people believe that if there were no flippers they would get an in demand print that is worth more than they paid for it at cost, which is false. If the print was not worth more than they paid for it close to the time of purchase, there would be no flippers, and even if there were it would not cost more from the flipper.
So who cares about flippers? There is no logical argument against them, but plenty emotional ones I am sure.

The accountability of course lies with the releasing gallery and they clearly have a vested interest in creating hype to drive demand.
At $800 or $1800 it's more money than sense in my opinion.

edit - having another look and reading Ross' post - is the dust cover on top the part that has the hands printed on it's just a matter of how it's lined up, or is it printed all in one with the registration that far off?
edit x2 - looks to me like either way you move it, that it's not going to line up at all.

there is actually nothing different to the standard verison. sod paying the extra.
i am happy with what i got from the exhibition and just the print for me to get now.

But is that part of the joy of this type of art. Its a bit rough and ready. Imperfect. Slightly out. A bit wrong.
I am off to have a glass of shiraz now to ease the pain. Cheerio.
