Experimental Print Release w/ David Heo, by seriopress on Jun 2, 2021 23:22:16 GMT 1, Hey all. Serio Press here.
This Friday, June 4th we'll be releasing our latest screen printed edition on our website. It's a fun one.
It will be our first edition with David Heo, and it will also be our first artist collaboration utilizing an experimental printmaking process. We're constantly exploring experimental techniques, though up until now they've all been executed by our master printer Tony Clough featuring his own artwork.
David Heo is a young, Chicago based artist who's practice includes painting and hand-cut paper collage. Heo commonly utilizes history to illustrate a range of folklore from grand, mythic metanarratives to quiet frames of daily life. By using the symbology classic to historical paintings and illustrations of mythology and folklore—the horse, the tiger, the dog—Heo typologies the people he meets and interactions during nights out.
For this edition, we've tried to emulate the look and feel of Heo's collage work strictly using the process of serigraphy. You can read all about it in our Instagram post.
https://www.instagram.com/p/CPmCUh3lMMh
Additionally, there will be a series of Hand-Painted Multiples.
https://www.instagram.com/p/CPoevbJFH18
Collectors are encouraged to touch the prints to fully appreciate their tactile nature. No white gloves necessary. Just wash your hands first.
Let us know if you have any questions, and we hope you dig it.
If any UAA members are interested shoot us a DM and we can set you up with a presale link.
Thanks for checking us out!

Experimental Print Release w/ David Heo, by seriopress on Jun 2, 2021 23:26:08 GMT 1, It was important to David that they remain accessible to his longterm collectors, so they're a great deal.
$450 for the main edition / $750 for the HPMs
Both editions ship flat.

Experimental Print Release w/ David Heo, by seriopress on Jun 2, 2021 23:51:38 GMT 1, It was important to David that they remain accessible to his longterm collectors, so they're a great deal. $450 for the main edition / $750 for the HPMs Both editions ship flat. I'm curious what you consider long term collectors for an artist who is 29 and I can only find works going back to 2018. There are 5 originals on artsy for 900 USD each. I understand that doing proper prints can be time consuming and costly, but there seems to be a very large disconnect on price between an original at 900 and a HPM print at 750. I'm just quoting Heo on the longterm collector thing. It was simply important to him that people who have supported him over the last few years can still afford this edition.
The pieces that are $900 are 9" x 12" collages. The prints are 16" x 21", and some of them have original collage elements on top of the print that are around the same size as the 9" x 12" works.
Sure, the HPM's are a higher cost relative to other prints released by the artist, but there's also a huge amount of work that went into creating them.

Experimental Print Release w/ David Heo, by Jimini Cricket on Jun 3, 2021 0:35:22 GMT 1, Playing the devil's advocate here. The pieces available on artsy are from last year, and not moving for $900. It's possible the equilibrium is lower.

Experimental Print Release w/ David Heo, by seriopress on Jun 3, 2021 1:18:27 GMT 1, Geez. Tough crowd. Implying that an artist's work is (possibly) overpriced simply because they have a few pieces available on Artsy seems a bit sensationalist.
It's a $450 print that's then hand-painted, and many of them have original collages added which as you just pointed out, are priced around $900. The print is also more than 3x the size of the $900 collages. We think think $750 is a valid price point but it's good to hear opinions that differ from our own.
We're always open to suggestions/constructive criticism/feedback and I realize this is nothing personal. Will the print flip a month after the release? Probably not. Is it a good value for the work that went into them? We think so.
We're just excited about an edition that we poured a lot of love into and wanted to share that with UAA.

Thanks for coming on here to engage with us. Not many are brave enough to. Props for helping artists put out work.

I personally appreciate the process you've done for the prints, but it just seems like your choice of artist may not have been the wisest for the process you're doing. You're trying to compare sizes, as if they were all originals. That would be understood by everyone here. If my math is right, the gallery would be selling an original that's the same size as the print for somewhere between 2000-4000,right?
You math stacks up and is a logical argument. But right now, the price is the price.

If my math is right, the gallery would be selling an original that's the same size as the print for somewhere between 2000-4000,right? Yeah, we get that. It's not the same as a 16" x 21" that's completely original. We just wanted to clarify since when you originally compared the prints to $900 originals it wasn't clear that there was a significant difference in scale.
David Heo doesn't typically create collage works larger than 9" x 12", so this edition is a sort of rare opportunity to pick up something in that style at a larger size.
Anything larger than 9" x 12" is typically a painting on canvas or panel. While I don't know his pricing of originals well enough to confirm your estimate, it seems likely to be in that range.
This process is something we plan to continue experimenting with, and we actually already have some pending artist collaborations that will utilize it. You're not wrong about our choice of artist for debuting this process. Would it have made more business sense to test an experimental process with an artist who had a strong, established print market and could sell works at a higher price? Absolutely. But making money from this edition wasn't our goal. One of the main reasons we chose to work with David is because his collage style was so well suited to testing this process. We could create large, flat shapes of texture that rise and fall throughout different sections of the print. Also, we really genuinely love David's work and he's a super sweet dude. We're stoked to collaborate with him and hopefully get his art into the hands of some new collectors.

Experimental Print Release w/ David Heo, by seriopress on Jun 3, 2021 1:48:47 GMT 1, seriopress a few artists that you may want to look up regarding the layered style you're doing : Shane turner, Alex eckman-lawn, 1010. I don't know if any of them are going to have a market to be worth the effort/cost, but I think they would be a good match for what you're doing. Awesome! Thanks for sharing. Those would all be great candidates for something like this. 1010 actually came up in conversation in our studio just a few days ago.
