Video, Animation and VR art, by Ravnur 2020 on Jun 8, 2021 4:55:38 GMT 1, I thought it might be of interest to some to have a thread dedicated to sharing links to and news about works of Video, Animation and VR art.
Over the last few years I have found that I have grown to enjoy these artforms more and more. At exhibitions I find myself dedicating more and more time to these pieces. I like Video, Animation and VR art, because you have to invest time in them there and then and you cannot really own them (mostly).
One site that has a great selection including some Tracey Emin, Rashid Johnson, Adam Pendleton, Pipilotti Rist etc etc is: ubu.com
Sometimes you have to resort to watching bootleg videos of video art on various online platforms, so it would be great if people share links to sites/exhibitions where originals might be screened (if only for a limited period).
So here is one of my favorites that I saw for the first time in 2019 at the Venice Biennale
Arthur Jafa "love is the message the message is death" ubu.com/film/jafa_message.html
and a new piece from Nan Goldin on show at the Marian Goodman Gallery: www.mariangoodman.com/nan-goldin-sirens/
Let it rip!
Cheers

Video, Animation and VR art, by theclash on Jun 8, 2021 6:23:50 GMT 1, This one was pretty cool at Neon Gallery although havenโt seen a video that does it justice. Can get an app to take the main image of Hugo Lamiโs paintings out into an AR form and place them somewhere else.

Video, Animation and VR art, by Ravnur 2020 on Jun 18, 2021 16:29:17 GMT 1, Dyscorpia is an art project investigating the intersections between the human (body) and technology. The project is run out of the Fine Arts and Science department of the Uni of Alberta in Edmonton with the collaboration of many Canadian and international artists.
The initial DYSCORPIA installment was a large exhibition in Edmonton in 2019: www.dyscorpia.com/work-2
The second installment Dyscorpia 2.1 in 2020 which features a lot of very interesting video and illustrated VR work was an online exhibition investigating the body and tech in the time of Covid: www.dyscorpia.com/dyscorpia-21
The third installment DY3CORPIA has just launched and features a fully navigable online virtual gallery again with several very interesting video pieces www.dyscorpia.com/dy3corpia-1
Enjoy!

Video, Animation and VR art, by Ravnur 2020 on Jul 1, 2021 15:50:35 GMT 1, Today 1st July is Canada Day, the Canadian national day. Canada has many good things to offer, but it is also grappling with a very dark and troubling settler and colonial past and to a great extent present, especially on how the First Nations of Canada have been and are treated and perceived. The recent discoveries of hundreds of unmarked graves at the residential schools are a deeply tragic reminder of this.
Jackson 2bears is a Canadian Mohawk multimedia and performance artist and cultural theorist who works with digital media, video, sound, computer music, interactive installation, and multimedia performance. As it says on his site Jackson 2bears "brings together post-structuralist discourse, post-colonial theory, and traditional and contemporary Indigenous philosophy to address questions of identity, the body, heritage, ancestry and technology from an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural perspective" and he does it very well!
On this day I think the Iron Tomahawks work of his is very apt as it tries to shed light on and break down stereotypes surrounding First Nations people and culture. This part is called "Heritage Mythologies - O Kanata Day"
Jackson 2bears website can be found here: jackson2bears.net/
