Richard Hambleton ๐จ๐ฆ Artist Discussion , by Pattycakes on Mar 10, 2008 22:05:41 GMT 1, So perhaps this has been discussed before, I don't know, but whilst in New York last week I met an NY street artist whose work frankly is incredibly similar to Mr. B, or more to the point Mr B's is rather similar to.
His name is Richard Hambleton, and I only came across him because a Gallery I went to visit represents him now. They gave me a catalogue about him and I was amazed at how similar Hambleton's and Banksys approach is. Hambleton started doing these really interesting murder scene chalk drawings all over the US in the early 80's, he then started pasting giant diazo printouts of himself all over NY with natty tag lines attached (think Shep Fairey etc.) Then moved onto shadow paintings of figures against walls. Some splattered referencing Yves Klein no doubt, others more traditional silhouette images. I'll try to get some images of the early works if people are interested.
I found it really fascinating, and was lucky enough to meet Richard briefly, who was a really humble sweet guy. He used to hang out with Basquiat and Haring and has clearly lived a pretty hard life, but he's beginning to get some recognition it seems with a few shows coming up in NY.
here are a couple of pics - the first two are from the mid 80's the bottom one from a recent exhibition he had in NY.

Richard Hambleton ๐จ๐ฆ Artist Discussion , by Trismanco on Mar 12, 2008 14:40:16 GMT 1, Richard Hambleton was one of Blek's original influences, from a trip he took to NY in the 80s. Same generation as Jerome Mesnager and Nemo. There were some very old faded ones in Barcelona's Barrio Gotic at the end of the 90s...

Very nice it is too... but $10k for the set of three from the Woodward Gallery (red, gold, silver - edition of 20). Don't know if they sell them singly but if so I'd imagine they're at least $3.5k each.

By icons you mean these?
Yeah... they're superb too - $15k for a set though. Can't make up my mind which of the two sets I'm saddest about not being able to afford

Richard Hambleton ๐จ๐ฆ Artist Discussion , by chiefhk on Oct 2, 2009 8:22:31 GMT 1, I've been hearing this name pop up recently (never heard of him before) and was wondering if anyone's heard of him or know anything about him? Apparently he's viewed in the same category as Haring and Basquiat?

Thanks, think his profile might be on the up again judging by the amount of chatter I've been hearing/reading!

I met him a few years ago in New York... He's been working hard for years... People should definitely check him out... John Fekner too, he's probably the biggest pioneer of street art! www.johnfekner.com/

The weird thing is unlike today, Haring, Fekner, Scharf and Basquiat were all accepted by the graffiti writers... Fekner rocks tho, the This was the ultimate piece of street art in it's day...

Not too sure, but John Fekner is a lovely bloke, he mailed me after he'd heard that I mentioned him in a talk I did at Tate Mod and said thank you... I was extremely chuffed to say the least. So I imagine he's pretty approachable, just mail him...

Thanks for all the info. It'll be good to have a piece of street art history from one of the pioneers especially since Baquiat is way out of my league!
Richard Hambleton would be a great option to consider as well!

Richard Hambleton ๐จ๐ฆ Artist Discussion , by Pattycakes on Oct 2, 2009 12:59:03 GMT 1, I wrote about him a year or so ago on the forum so you can probably dig it up from a search. I met him last year at Woodward Gallery in the East Village, a really nice bloke though obviously he's done far too many drugs for his own good. I bought an amazing 80's work on paper of a splatterd man, if you look at the Banksy of the dog shaking water from his fur it's clearly very heavily influenced by this period in Hambleton's work. considering you can buy an original 80's piece for under $3,000 he's a great buy.
