Presales - WTF is that all about, by Terry Fuckwitt on Jul 10, 2021 14:34:43 GMT 1, Thought I would start a thread as it always bugs me. Why do galleries or artists presale stuff before it's made, finished or ready to be dispatched? I get the ones that need the funds available to be able to go ahead and make the art, but why do more established artists/galleries do it? The amount of times you hear that they are behind schedule or sending out emails apologising that there is a delay, blah blah... I'm quite patient and happy to sit and wait, but going by comments here with people sending emails or phoning to find out where their purchase is, surely it makes it a pain in the arse for them when things don't go to plan with the time schedule. Someone put me out my misery please, so I can get on with my life without worrying about it 24 hours a day.

Presales - WTF is that all about, by Ravnur 2020 on Jul 10, 2021 14:57:06 GMT 1, Good question. Getting funds as you say probably the most obvious. Another could be to drum up early expectations and more visibility and that way maybe selling more and other works by same or other gallery artists? Especially if the pre -sale sells out. For example the pre-sale of the Charlotte Keats book has definitely given her extra exposure here and probably resulted in a few extra works sold by her. Personally I like pre-sale, the waiting just makes it that much sweeter when the work arrives (within reason of course).
cheers

Presales - WTF is that all about, by soupy on Jul 10, 2021 15:00:55 GMT 1, i agree.... it has become more and more commonplace ... and the wait times are getting longer and longer. add on the covid complications with travel / mail and it was a shitshow for a while. some big name artists and galleries were basically having the customers fund their operations. free working capital and lines of credit off the individual instead of running it like a business.
they just realized the demand is there so no need to put up their own money.

Presales - WTF is that all about, by tab1 on Jul 10, 2021 15:05:10 GMT 1, www.google.com/amp/s/www.modernretail.co/startups/why-some-dtc-brands-are-opting-for-a-pre-sale-strategy/amp/
Creates more discussion around the product without having the extra costs of marketing
Lowers the remaining stock for the official release day which inevitably sells out as probably 40% of the stock is left which creates more discussion as some work is judged on how quickly it sells out which then pushes up the secondary market.

Presales - WTF is that all about, by Terry Fuckwitt on Jul 10, 2021 15:22:13 GMT 1, Thanks, all good answers here and good link tab1. So it's mainly a marketing strategy when it comes to the big companies doing it and a mixture of money and marketing for the smaller ones. I suppose it makes sense that more seem to be doing it this way these days with the way social media works. It's like gig tickets these days... you have to know if your free on a certain day over a year in advance, while the ticket companies invest millions of your dosh and make another shit load more. Anyway thanks, that's a load off my mind🙂

Presales - WTF is that all about, by punk77 on Jul 11, 2021 11:15:53 GMT 1, New to a lot of this, but presale to me has seemed like a plan to scare people into fear of missing out if limited edition. I.e i enquired on an item, the gallery communicated non stop, limited presale numbers and short timeframe etc. I received no 70 of 100 and presale continued for several days. I asked if the prints were actually allocated in order of when the order placed, but no reply.
