Damien Hirst, The Currency, NFT, by nobokov on Jul 14, 2021 16:33:51 GMT 1, Really enjoyed the Mark Carney interview. Interesting concept, but you have to be a nerd not an art fan to choose an NFT over the painting? Owning a work of art vs owning the provenance of a work of art that once existed. No brainer, right? Not necessarily. What if more people choose to hold the NFT and it trades for an astronomical amount? People would then choose the NFT if they can find another buyer quickly. If everyone chose the object, will that decrease the value of the object? If everyone choose the NFT, would that increase the value of the object? 10,000 objects seems like a quantity high enough to make them not very unique so storing value in those objects that are small, not visually appealing seems like it would need quite the market psychology to hold value. But who knows right? It seems like he's trying to create his own cryptocurrency through this experiment and since it's an experiment, if it fails, it wouldn't reflect poorly on him. Since he's holding 1000 of both the NFT and work, he's hedging either way because no one knows how it's gonna turn out.

Damien Hirst, The Currency, NFT, by Deleted on Jul 14, 2021 16:37:28 GMT 1, Entered, fingers crossed. Would think pretty much anyone who applies will get "picked". Really? When I read this below, I thought the opposite.
"We try to ensure that everyone has a chance to purchase an NFT, which means there is an open application that lasts one week. Every application will be reviewed and assigned to an appropriate bucket. Each bucket has a set amount of works to be distributed among the successful applicants.
The buckets include NFT Power Users, DeFi users, HENI customers, general users, partners and team members and Damien himself who will be keeping 1,000 NFTs. He will hold the NFTs (and the corresponding artworks if any of the NFTs are exchanged) for five years except for a small number he might auction off for philanthropic or charitable purposes.
There are approximately 1,000 - 2,000 NFTs within each bucket.
We will use a snapshot taken 24 hours before launch to determine whether you qualify as NFT Power User or DeFi Native User."
If I've read this properly, there will only be 1000 to 2000 available for most of us first time non-Power users which doesn't feel like many. Surely the General Users (which is HENI customers, new customers and Partners & Community) grouping will easily be the vast majority of applicants...all fighting over one bucket?

Damien Hirst, The Currency, NFT, by .dappy on Jul 14, 2021 16:43:37 GMT 1, I’ve looked and I can’t see anywhere where it says you get sent the original work it says you trade the nft for an original but does that original stay in the heni vault? That would be an interesting spin, if they do ... I would be careful about this point made by grrr ... it is not clear to me either ...

This line implies the originals will be shipped. Though, I agree, it is not crystal clear.

Thank you for reaching out, and for your interest in The Currency! Yes I can confirm that if you choose to exchange the NFT for the corresponding physical artwork, then the physical artwork will be delivered to the buyer. More information about the exchange will become available before the exchange period opens, and shipping information of the physical artwork will become available when the exchange period opens.

Damien Hirst, The Currency, NFT, by Riotcops on Jul 14, 2021 17:03:09 GMT 1, Someone help me out… So even if I don’t necessarily support it, I get the NFT concept for digital art e.g. proving original ownership of art created digitally (Photoshop etc). However in this context who wouldn’t want the original piece?! Since it’s physical/real and as the owner of such you can create your own unique digital representation?! You could even potentially stick your own digital representation of the image up for sale as an NFT yourself thereafter?! Plus you have something nice to stick on your wall… 🤔 You in no way have the right to reproduce or sell a digitized version of the artwork. You will not own the Copyright.

I don't see why most people would ever pick an NFT for something they don't actually own copyright to over a physical work with texture that is signed with an individual hand written name. It's not even a gimmicky gif, it's an image of a piece of paper.

They went on to reproduce the necklace and sell them through the franklin mint and made a cool 43 Million. Makes you wonder what is the actual copyright protect? side note: this family went on to buy up alot of tfarm land in california and pretty much grabbed alot of water rights to the central valley at the same time. Further putting CA in a water crisis (as usual) while they grow their pistachios and pomegranates. www.wonderful.com

Shocked by how much I like the idea actually.

Damien Hirst, The Currency, NFT, by whatsthestory on Jul 14, 2021 17:52:16 GMT 1, Another detail I just thought of that is very clever is the grouping into essentially "regular collectors" and "nerdy crypto people".
If the distribution went to mostly average Joe's then of course almost all 10,000 would be redeemed as paper. But a good chunk of these will go to existing NFT collectors and Defi users. They will both be a lot more likely to keep the NFT (although not all) and will create a much more interesting dynamic.

Damien Hirst, The Currency, NFT, by nobokov on Jul 14, 2021 18:12:48 GMT 1, It's not original if there's 10000 of them. What are you people thinking? I could draw a smilie face 10,000 times but each of those smilie faces would still be an original.
What if you drew it 1,000,000 times? Would it still be worth anything? At what point does the quantity make an original lose its novelty?

just like paper money and most other things of value, they are only as valuable as we believe them to be. 1K, 10K, 100K, 1 million.. all those numbers are very small in the grand scheme of its potential. there is easily over 1 million people in the world that Like hirst work. Weather they are willing to pay for a piece of his is another story.
I could draw a smilie face 10,000 times but each of those smilie faces would still be an original. What if you drew it 1,000,000 times? Would it still be worth anything? At what point does the quantity make an original lose its novelty? not sure if this matters to you or not, but for some comparison reference. total # of bitcoins ever to be created will be 21 million cost of a 1 bitcoin when originally released $0. current Value of bitcoin (july /14/21) = $33,000 just like paper money and most other things of value, they are only as valuable as we believe them to be. 1K, 10K, 100K, 1 million.. all those numbers are very small in the grand scheme of its potential. there is easily over 1 million people in the world that Like hirst work. Does that mean that you're betting on the NFT over the object and will it be able to be traded on a wider exchange platform?
