Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by vvk on Jul 13, 2021 23:21:34 GMT 1, This project/exercise does make one ponder about what currency really is and what has intrinsic value etc…. (Although an NFT is not itself any form of currency or even cryptocurrency from what I understand, so it’s a slight conflation between the two concepts by Hirst). Personally I don’t see the need to pay £2k to participate in the experiment, but it could get interesting further down the line. But who knows, Heni and elsewhere may ultimately accept these NFTs as tender for other (not NFT) works by Hirst. I once robbed a store at gunpoint, then immediately returned to buy a candybar with their own money. Not the same concept, but boy was that a great day. i once robbed a store for a candy bar, i went home started to eat it, mom asked where i got it and she knew exactly what i did. she took me by the ear back to the store. boy what a bad day.

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by jimmyjam on Jul 14, 2021 1:17:31 GMT 1, This is a interesting idea. Somewhat of a gamble.
They are small and 10,000 of them. It looks like a larger piece - just cut up.
But 2k for a small original Hirst (probably done by assistants) or NFT...
"Each of the physical works corresponds to a non-fungible token, which can be bought, on application, for rather more than a tenner — $2,000 apiece. The NFTs are immediately tradeable, in the usual way. But here’s the special Hirst-devised twist: two months after issue, owners of the NFTs have a choice. You will have to make a decision on whether to keep the NFT or the physical artwork: you can’t keep both. If you decide on the NFT, or fail to make a choice, the corresponding piece of art will be destroyed. If it’s the physical work you choose, the NFT will be deleted from the blockchain."

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by vvk on Jul 14, 2021 1:46:54 GMT 1, at first glance i thought they were part of larger screen prints that were cut up and resused, (ala faile 150 series) now seeing more/ this image I m convinced they were produced by robots then cataloged by humans. I love the idea of keeping one ( paper)or the other ( NFT) while the other is getting destroyed. seems to me you would keep the original, then when heni destroyed /burned the nft , (sent the token to a burner address). You would have the ability / right to make your own NFT from the print and sell it.(insert burned banksy NFT here). Would be interested to learn if Heni / Hirst have set up a Royalty scheme in place for those who decide to keep the NFT then later resell it. such as every-time the nft gets resold, first and heni get a cut of the resale sale that gets automatically sent to their eth wallet. Yes this is possible with NFTs. Power to the people, in this case the people are the creators.
incase you do not have access to the FT article . try this one.

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by zoomrider on Jul 14, 2021 7:50:58 GMT 1, Someone help me out…
So even if I don’t necessarily support it, I get the NFT concept for digital art e.g. proving original ownership of art created digitally (Photoshop etc).
However in this context who wouldn’t want the original piece?! Since it’s physical/real and as the owner of such you can create your own unique digital representation?! You could even potentially stick your own digital representation of the image up for sale as an NFT yourself thereafter?! Plus you have something nice to stick on your wall…
🤔

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by reg on Jul 14, 2021 8:04:27 GMT 1, I'm still not entirely convinced about nfts. Perhaps it's my age but by having Mark Carney stood next to Hirst, somehow gives some weird authenticity to what I still think is one massive ponsi scheme.
And again, it might just be me but aren't nfts unique? I get a print run of 10000 and I would own one of 10000 - a tangible asset - but is there any merit in owning one of 10000 nfts of the same thing?
In my head this is a Hirst print run, a small image and large edition and therefore not particularly well priced so I think I'll give this one a swerve until I fully understand what it is I'm buying 🤣

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by dunkers on Jul 14, 2021 9:10:41 GMT 1, It will be interesting to see the split between those who chose the artwork and those who chose the NFT.
Forcing the choice will make people have to consider whether they are buying for art or to invest. I know next to nothing about the NFT market but would assume if everyone opted for the original then the value of the NFT would increase more than the painting as the number of NFTs decrease. This could mean more try to retain the NFT if they bought solely as currency for speculative financial return.

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by aumi on Jul 14, 2021 9:16:52 GMT 1, Compared to his last edition The Virtues there were around 7500 in total. Now I could get an original artwork for 2k. Supposedly all works are different and even named different. So, basically you get a small original artwork for 2k. If that is right it seems to be a pretty good deal. Image if someone told you 5 days ago you could get hold of a DH for 2k... Am I missing something here?

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by Horatio Nelson on Jul 14, 2021 9:36:34 GMT 1, I didn’t realise the “either or” element and that you could ultimately end up with delivery of the work.
Whilst an experiment with the results yet to be determined, it looks to me as if this may well (and is intended to) undermine NFTs. That might explain why you have a smiling Mark Carney going along with this.

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by aumi on Jul 14, 2021 11:34:25 GMT 1, I'm still confused. 1. Has Damien Hirst really produced 10,000 originals? How long would that take you? 2. Has Damien Hirst really numbered, titled and signed 10,000 pieces of paper? How long would that take you? 3. Are Heni really going to keep 10,000 originals in their vault? How big is this 'vault' of theirs? 4. Are you really given the option of keeping the NFT or having the original artwork? If so, who in their right mind would choose a token rather than the real thing? That's like choosing an e-mail from Banksy or having a signed Banksy on the wall. None of this really adds up. I guess that is why he called it an experiment. No one knows what the fuck is going on in the end. But a Hirst OG for 2k is a fair deal.

(also think it are larger works cut up.) Guess ppl just understand the mindfuck when it's a physical artwork instead of a digital one, but in this case it's actually redeemable.

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by Pawel on Jul 14, 2021 11:41:00 GMT 1, I'm still confused. 1. Probably done by assistants. Given you can make 10 a day, 10 asistants would make them in 4 months. 2. Maybe, or signed by assistants 3. That are small works on papier, storage is not an issue. 4. They apparently give the buyer the option.
