Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by Deleted on Jul 27, 2021 13:44:51 GMT 1, You are the one that is going to have to prepare to be surprised. You vastly underestimate how good this project is and just how much money NFT collectors have. Loads of these guys got in ETH early and have millions to play around with. 1) these aren't NFTs currently and 2) you still have multiple decades of physical releases from Hirst. Confused by this post. What do you mean by "these aren't NFTs currently"? When they're issued to buyers on 29th they'll be NFTs.

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by grrr on Jul 27, 2021 13:45:21 GMT 1, I’m totally new to all this i wasn’t really aware what an nft was. Ive been thinking about it and I’m probably miles off but could this be seen as a currency such as Bitcoin so let’s call each nft = one DH and there will only ever be 10,000 DH’s. Then would there be a way these could be split down into fractions of currency’s so you can buy 0.5 of a DH. Which would then make the artwork just a serial number/authentication to the currency. So after time the artwork is irrelevant and it’s more about the currency itself. In this scenario (if it’s possible) then prices could go way up as people trade fractions of a DH. Also could Damien let you purchase future works from him using DH as the currency so .25 of a DH buys you the next hirst print. Please let me know how wrong I am I know zero about bitcoins nft’s etc but I’ve been thinking about the project and I think the currency theme will run deaper than most think yeah you've misunderstood a bit there. NFTs, by their name, cannot be split. I'd suggest watching a few informative videos on NFTs etc. Thanks 👍🏻 I need to read up more at least this project has made me aware of how little I do know about this stuff and maybe it’s time I learnt

Well.. you have stumbled upon the cutting edge of NFTs here and the answer is.. sort of. You couldn't have a fraction of the original. But a separate but linked token could launch. I guess you would think of them like prints. Good read here:

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by grrr on Jul 27, 2021 14:18:11 GMT 1, I’ve had a read through that article it’s very interesting. So it looks like Damien has based this project in a similar way to crypto punks both having 10,000 nfts available. What price do crypto punks go for I read 7.7 million dollars is that correct? How much were they originally? This is such an interesting project and when these nft investors get involved and club together these could take on a life of their own. I can’t believe the money that floats around in the crypto world. How many did Damien keep? I read 1000-2000 he didn’t do that just to use as gifts
edit: Ive just read that crypto punks were between $1 - $30 in 2017 they now sell for millions of dollars each and their basically little digital portraits of characters? And one just sold for $11.8 million at Sotheby’s I find it all bizarre and really interesting

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by Rude Copper on Jul 27, 2021 14:27:02 GMT 1, This is what hirst does best He is challenging the concept of cash vs Bitcoin, physical vs ethereal, it’s his experiment to see people’s faith in the digital concept, and classic hirst, you’re paying for his folly. He has invented rarities so that he can encourage trading, but have a look at the basis of the rarities, he’s telling you there worth more but for what reason?, you’re only believing it because he’s telling you it’s true. It’s an experiment in people’s faith in the digital age, how many will keep the NFT how many will keep the physical work, ITs Damien pushing people’s buttons again and asking them to pay for the privilege

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by Deleted on Jul 27, 2021 14:36:00 GMT 1, “Non-fungible” more or less means that it’s unique and can’t be replaced with something else. This sounds like semantics. What would you say is being issued on the 29th? Because everybody else involved, including the artist, is calling them NFTs.
In this context, doesn't non-fungible simply mean it's a unique digital asset? It can be exchanged for the physical painting because that isn't a digital asset. It's not identical.

Hence why it has to be burnt in exchange for an original. Do try to keep up.

Punks were pretty much the original NFT project. And have taken off massively lately. The prices are quite insane but who am I to judge. But keep in mind there are thousands of these types of projects now, several launch every day. Some last, some flop. The HENI team have done their research and tailored this perfectly to appeal to both types of investor.
The only caveat is that Punks and others like them have appeal as avatars. For the younger generation having a unique Twitter avatar is as appealing as having art on their wall. This project of course doesn't have that angle. But it'll still do very well I think.

I bet good portion of them were bought for a quick flip so there will be quite easily obtainable.

You don't understand what non fungible means. You seem to think the paper version qualifies as an identical item. I’m not sure you understand what identical means.

It will take a long time for these to saturate to a point where they appreciate.

Whilst you are permitted to sell, transfer or trade the Hirst NFT, you do not have the right to use the Digital Artwork for commercial purposes including, without limitation, to do any of the following for commercial purposes: (i) reproduce the Digital Artwork or make or sell copies of it; (ii) modify the Digital Artwork or create derivate works of it; (iii) incorporate the Digital Artwork in any other work or forms of media; (iv) mint, tokenize or create an additional cryptographic token, including an NFT, representing or associated with the Digital Artwork; or (v) otherwise exploit the Digital Artwork for commercial purposes.

They're NFTs, which have their own trading market full of lots of people with very deep pockets. It's not just going to be people trying to buy one that they can swap for a painting and put in a flat file. There may be people trying to buy tens, or hundreds, as long-term assets. People who couldn't give a monkeys about the art. Or there may not be, but whatever happens it's not going to be anything like the usual post-release market.
Nobody knows what will happen, but thinking of it the same way as any other release is wrong.

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by psycho666 on Jul 27, 2021 15:41:58 GMT 1, I wonder if that will have a positive or negative impact on the secondary market price before or after the exchange period, i.e. the NFT can be sold and either kept as an NFT or exchanged for the physical version but after the exchange period the NFT will always be an NFT.

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by grrr on Jul 27, 2021 15:55:13 GMT 1, I’ve had a read through that article it’s very interesting. I read 1000-2000 he didn’t do that just to use as gifts edit: Ive just read that crypto punks were between $1 - $30 in 2017 they now sell for millions of dollars each and their basically little digital portraits of characters? And one just sold for $11.8 million at Sotheby’s I find it all bizarre and really interesting Punks were pretty much the original NFT project. I see what you mean they crypto punks have a collector card theme about them and appeal to a younger generation. Having said that I think this could be a project that spans the age gap bringing together art collectors and crypto collectors. It’s already worked for me. The established appeal of Damien hirst will presumably add something to this project and he has the advantage of mainstream auction houses, media networks and celebrities to pump its value. I think all speculative pricing of these works has to take into account the crypto collecting factor. Most people on here can price range a print or original but this is something totally different. When I first read about this project it was a no brainer for me to keep the original and burn the nft now I’m not so sure. I think the original has a ceiling price we can all guess what that will be. The nft on the other hand I am clueless where it will end up and it has the potential to be worth far more than the original ever could

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by Charlie Bronson on Jul 27, 2021 16:28:35 GMT 1, I think the main question here is, how do we get the attention of the deep pocket having nft crypto crowd? If cyber punk nft’s are getting that much, surely a Hirst original nft will garner a shit ton of money too?🤷🏻♂️ I’d love to cash in my $2k Hirst for the new Porsche GT3😂

Damien Hirst NFT "The Currency", by surf101 on Jul 27, 2021 16:30:52 GMT 1, I wonder if that will have a positive or negative impact on the secondary market price before or after the exchange period, i.e. the NFT can be sold and either kept as an NFT or exchanged for the physical version but after the exchange period the NFT will always be an NFT. Interesting will be to see how long die hard nft cyptopunks hold onto their option before deciding to burn (if at all). There is so much speculation on the Discord by people who simply want to up the value of their own individual currency.
The rarities will actually happen of their own accord within the market, not because of any one persons influence over the situation. The immediate market is not any sort of price marker.

The nft on the other hand I am clueless where it will end up and it has the potential to be worth far more than the original ever could I think the long term (5-10 years) end result for the current NFT market is going to be similar to what you mentioned, collector card/trading card market. Most everything else will probably end up worthless and forgotten, similar to loot crates/skins for video games that no one plays anymore. Maybe at some point in the future we will have displays that can show texture and moveable lighting for an image and cameras that can also capture that, but until that happens, there isn't a replacement for physical art that has the depth, texture, reflections, etc. This is what every photographer and magazine said right before the iPad came out. "It won't kill magazines... I love the feel of paper" Yeah I saw what happened just in a couple years to those magazines... dead and they were big ones as well.
I think every industry should take note that technology can definitely someday drastically affect your market/business unless you prepare yourself. Art galleries and the art world definitely can be next. Just talk to taxi drivers in nyc... if they are still around.
