Damien Hirst NFT or Original , by Horatio Nelson on Jul 15, 2021 20:08:55 GMT 1, Does the fact that, as extrapolated from this poll, paintings could outnumber NFTs by 20 to 1, not make anyone reconsider whether they would want to hold the NFT instead? (Me, probably not, but just putting the question out there).

You are right, but to me this whole scheme devised by Hirst is part of the art - a bit like Banksyโs shredder stunt as others have alluded to.
So if you are left owning one NFT out of, say, 500 left after 9,500 other people have opted for the physical work, you hold a slightly more interesting (one might say) element of the broader artwork, which will have a bit more of a story behind it. Not sought after for scarcity alone, but for being more inherently linked with the concept underlying the artwork. Whereas most people who end up with the physical work will just say - look, Iโve got an original Hirst up on the wall and will probably see the workโs earlier NFT origins as a red herring going forwards.

Damien Hirst NFT or Original , by inefficiency of on Jul 16, 2021 5:37:41 GMT 1, Accidentally clicked NFT in the poll. 1 million times Yes to keeping the painting. Do you like the image?
Whilst I appreciate its not the most technical and refined I do really like the image. Iโm certainly not like the large number of people here and have large amounts of disposable income to be spending. If I was to purchase This would be the most expensive piece I own.
Iโve always liked his dot paintings. I like the playful and simple nature of them. Also the fact itโs a painting with the interactive and destructive NFT element and not a print really interests me. ๐๐ป

I don't find the images ugly at all. In fact, they're so simple and inoffensive that they're kind of the ideal choice for something like this. There's not a lot to dislike. It's just some random dots. I doubt anyone would say one of these would be the Hirst they'd pick if they had a choice, but if it's the one opportunity to own a Hirst original, I can't see anyone hanging this and finding it objectionable to look at.
The argument could of course be made that wanting a piece of art that you don't love is just glorified autograph collecting.

I've never understood the appeal of NFTs. One day, people will wake up and realise their collection of unique NFTs are completely worthless. I personally just dont get the same gratification of looking at it, it's not the same as a physical original to me, especially when theres already hi-res images of them all on the heni site... what exactly is it you end up owning here?

Damien Hirst NFT or Original , by RoboJ on Jul 16, 2021 10:47:28 GMT 1, Iโm not interested in the NFT whatsoever. The opportunity to buy an OG is the only appeal. As far as value is concerned, a digital representation of a physical object will never have the value of the real object. Put it this way, if there was no OG available and just a jpeg would anywhere near the same number of people be interested, if any

Damien Hirst NFT or Original , by vvk on Jul 16, 2021 19:54:02 GMT 1, i understand that this is probably not how any of this works and that its very hard for me to grasp the NFT concept. . but to me, the question of which to keep is similar to cutting wood. if you cutter a bigger piece then you ned you can alwsy trim to fit. however if you cut to short, its not so easy to make it work.
what i am trying to say is. if you destroy the physical , you can never get it back. however if you destroy/ burn the NFT, you can always make a jpeg from the physical.
again, I clearly have no clue how this works and still scratching my whole head and nuts.

It's an interesting thought isn't it, clearly when someone buys a print to instantly flip they are not interested in the image or framing it, so it is in a sense much more like a currency for trading or perhaps more similar to a share or an option, and actually having a piece of paper that you need to handle carefully and store safely etc. Is a bigger pain in the backside then storing a piece of code/block chain etc. If you love art for the textures and seeing it in the flesh and having it on a wall to view at your leisure the relationship is completely different.
My thoughts are that artists are effectively building a potentially new digital currency...art as currency, the fact that you get a digital image is secondary to the bigger picture.
