Miss Bugs - Daffy Duck Original, by nacional on Apr 1, 2008 16:52:18 GMT 1, I am so jealous I may have to hunt you down and kill you. I got in touch with the wonderful duo, but were told they were not doing any more commisions until after their show. I just know that in the meantime prices have rocketed and yet another artist (see Hush) has flown out of my budgetary atmosphere....

Miss Bugs - Daffy Duck Original, by nacional on Apr 1, 2008 17:22:14 GMT 1, Don't get what I wrote or don't get the idea behind the canvas??
Duck, bugs, disney connection, witty snipe at an iconic image, superimposing their trademark over another, better know trademark etc etc. Or forget the title and just enjoy the cute image..
Or don't...

Thats what comes of being a dull academic who makes a living at interpreting the meaning of art in it many guises.
I guess.
Any interpretation has to finish with a phrase like that.....

Miss Bugs - Daffy Duck Original, by nacional on Apr 1, 2008 20:04:38 GMT 1, An academic yes, not a lecturer in art, or anything for that matter. And remember that visual art is not the only kind of art. There are lots of professions that revolve around interpreting art in various guises: music journalist, author of lit. crit texts, historian, etc etc.
Where to sign up. Any university I guess. Or just start a website or thousands of other avenues....
The Miss Bugs image above is actually extremely complex and I could bore for Britain about it for hours, as could, I suspect many more people on this forum, who could also do it far better than me. And the best thing is that even if the artist did not intend "it" to be there, it doesn't mean that "it" isn't there..

Miss Bugs - Daffy Duck Original, by mattmo on Apr 1, 2008 20:26:47 GMT 1, Would be a much improved piece without the duck. If the duck is staying at least paint the whites of his eyes white and the collar white. Also i've never seen a smoke detector mounted the way you've done it. I've only ever seen them on ceilings.

Miss Bugs - Daffy Duck Original, by nacional on Apr 1, 2008 20:50:52 GMT 1, Actually I think the fact that the eyes and the collar still bear the traces of the "original piece" is a very nice touch. Gives the duck a sense of being a temporary image that is passing thru and adds motion and a sense of urgency to it, as does the body trailing away. Blah freaking blah......

Miss Bugs - Daffy Duck Original, by nacional on Apr 1, 2008 21:26:33 GMT 1, What is the second shot?
Paint on tail are not drips, they are played for and deliberate: don't look like brush strokes, no idea what they were done with, maybe a spatula of some sort.
Put it on a street corner and someone will very quickly grab it and quite possibly put in on ebay where it will get about 3000 quid (or maybe more).
Opening up a can of worms, if this thread can be juxta-posed to musicians, I like to think of myself as Nick Drake or possibly Tim Buckley. Whilst ruralhick and mattmo would be Plastic Betrand or Jilted John or maybe Captain Sensible.
Sort that one out.......and reply in kind, I am loving this......

Gives the duck a sense of being a temporary image that is passing thru and adds motion and a sense of urgency to it, as does the body trailing away. Blah freaking blah...... I'm sure you're a lovely person who always sees the best in things. That is an admirable quality. The problem with this forum is that pieces like this (and there are countless other 'artists' that could be mentioned) are mixed in with posts about artists like Jose Parla, Adam Neate etc. There is no quality control. People get confused. They think because these artists are discussed on the same pages that they bear similar consideration and criticism. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but if you're spouting shit like above we should be able to challenge it. Try criticising one of the Parla pieces from the recent Italian show and we might hear something interesting instead of wasting words on 'art' that does not merit it.

Miss Bugs - Daffy Duck Original, by nacional on Apr 1, 2008 22:11:52 GMT 1, I love Parla as well.
Please mattmo, could you give me (us) an artistic appreciation or "spout shit" as you put it comparing Parla and Miss Bugs.
I am also so pleased that you are concerned about people who get confused, probably people who do not have the intellectual artistic savvy that you have, and that you are watching their back.
Isn't all one guy's appreciation another guy's crap anyway. I make my living from what you call "spouting shit", it may be "shit" but you can bet that it's good, well informed shit!!!!
Over to you bro. Peace.

Miss Bugs - Daffy Duck Original, by mattmo on Apr 1, 2008 22:41:57 GMT 1, Just to check. We're looking at a knock off Hirst Spot painting with a dripping Daffy Duck on top, yeah? My point is that it does not bear criticism on any level so why would i even want to try. Its poorly executed, of very dubious meaning and looks plain ugly. If someone has paid money for this and they enjoy it fine. If you lot can sing its praises others should be allowed to counter that. So what if you'd prefer it on your wall over a Parla, is that supposed to be some stamp of approval? Hope this helps.

Miss Bugs - Daffy Duck Original, by nacional on Apr 1, 2008 23:37:14 GMT 1, Still waiting for the artistic appraisal Mattmo. To say it does not bear criticism is just wrong. Everything can be critiqued. Come on mate, say something about it.
I can get you started.
Street art is normally subverting popular images, mass images, stencils over ad hoardings, messing around with road signs, hell, even Walkers Nikers is playing with a mass image.
But, here we get Miss Bugs (even the name is playful and subversive: Bugs Bunny is a boy for Christ sake) taking Hirst top end subversive (and, yes, Hirst is subversive) contemporary art and... wait for it... subverting the image of it with a popular mass image, that of a Disney character. Subversion by popularism, subversion turned upon its head, the rebel becomes the conformist, the conformist becomes the rebel.
There ya go mate, pick it up from there, lower yourself plunge in.
Anyway, Manchestermike has spoken and that really is that...
And, mammal, this time you win, Jeff beats Tim by a whisker.......
