dr.d - OLYMPICS PRINT NOW UP, by s-editions on Mar 29, 2008 7:52:54 GMT 1, We have just taken delivery of a brand spankin' new print from dr.d. That arterial blood splatter was not done in Photoshop - she actually made the black print, splattered on to it and re-photographed it. We are just hoping it's not real blood, but are too scared to ask!
It would not surprise us at all if you started seeing these on Tube trains and a larger version on the street. The first person to post a photograph of it on this forum and email us to tell us they have done so will get an Artist's Proof courtesy of the good dr.

dr.d - OLYMPICS PRINT NOW UP, by morrissey1 on Mar 29, 2008 15:22:45 GMT 1, I think Dr. D's image is more striking and the simplicity of the white background, blood splatter (I know it's been done before, but I think it really works here)....would be my top pick (and will likely buy one)

dr.d - OLYMPICS PRINT NOW UP, by morrissey1 on Mar 29, 2008 15:47:14 GMT 1, IMO there is nothing more beautiful to put on a wall than a great piece of political-minded art. Sure, I dont have kids to worry about looking at it.....but the more political, the more radical, the better for me......and I think this s-editions print is a great one...IMO

dr.d - OLYMPICS PRINT NOW UP, by darjeeling on Mar 29, 2008 16:22:53 GMT 1, That image with the cuffs is right on!
But the drd - I don't get it, it's the olympic logo with blood splatter... Is there a conceptual twist that I'm missing? You could take any symbol that you don't like and splatter blood on it. Big deal. The "Made in China" tagline is that necessary? I think Beijing 08 is good enough. How about "Mad in China?" I dunno...

dr.d - OLYMPICS PRINT NOW UP, by Pure Evil on Mar 29, 2008 16:57:08 GMT 1, the handcuff image is a poster / flag that was made and unfurled as a protest at the opening of the Olympics in Greece by 'Reporters without Borders' AKA 'ballsy motherf*ckers' ....
www.rsf.org/
I love it because it shows the power of a strong symbolic image..

Last Updated: Monday, 24 March 2008, 22:09 GMT E-mail this to a friend Printable version Olympic torch lit despite protest A protester broke through security and attempted to display a flag while China's representative spoke - 24/03/2008 A protester briefly ran behind Beijing's envoy as he spoke
Ceremony protest The Olympic torch has been lit at a ceremony in Greece that was briefly disrupted by pro-Tibet activists.
Protesters from media rights group Reporters Without Borders broke through the cordon of 1,000 police officers in Olympia as China's envoy spoke.
Activists had vowed to protest over the violence in and around Tibet.
The torch will now be carried in an around-the-world relay through 20 countries, before arriving in Beijing for the start of the Games on 8 August.
As Liu Qi, head of the Beijing Olympic organising committee, spoke ahead of the torch lighting, three men broke into the ceremony venue.
See map of Olympic torch relay route
One ran up behind him attempting to display a black flag depicting the Olympic rings made from handcuffs.
The men were from the France-based media rights watchdog Reporters Sans Frontieres (Reporters Without Borders, or RSF), which has called for a boycott of the opening ceremony of the games.
The torch is the link between all athletes and citizens of this world... It has the force to unite humanity and to stand for harmony Jacques Rogge, IOC President
In pictures: Torch ceremony
They were quickly bundled away by police and Mr Liu continued his speech uninterrupted.
The live television coverage, beaming the scene around the world, quickly cut away from Mr Liu and the protesters until they had been removed.
"We cannot let the Chinese government seize the Olympic flame, a symbol of peace, without denouncing the dramatic human rights situation in the country," RSF said in a statement.
Later, as the torch began its journey, pro-Tibet activists unfurled banners and shouted slogans before Greek security wrestled them away.
'Boycott unwanted'
Actors dressed in ancient Greek costume then lit the torch in the traditional manner by using a parabolic mirror to focus the sun's rays.
Torch lighting ceremony in Olympia, Greece - 24/03/2008 Despite cloudy weather, the torch was lit using the sun's rays
There were fears that stormy weather would prevent the torch being lit in the customary way.
The ceremony, beside the Temple of Hera, was moved forward by an hour and the sun shone through a break in the clouds.
The head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Jacques Rogge, has defended the decision to hold the Games in China saying: "The major political leaders don't want a boycott".
In his speech during the ceremony, Mr Rogge said the Olympic torch relay and the Games should take place in a peaceful environment.
"The torch is the link between all athletes and citizens of this world; between all of us who believe in Olympism and the virtue of sport. It has the force to unite humanity and to stand for harmony."
He told the Associated Press news agency on Monday that he was engaged on a daily basis in "silent diplomacy" with Beijing on Tibet and other human rights issues.
Tibet unrest
Tibet activists are angered that the torch's 136,000-km (85,000-mile) route will take it through the Himalayan region and Mount Everest, which straddles the border between Nepal and Tibet.
China sent troops to Tibet in 1950 and since then there have been periods of unrest and sporadic uprisings as resentment of Beijing's rule has persisted.
The latest round of anti-China protests began in Tibet's main city, Lhasa, on 10 March - the 49th anniversary of a failed uprising - and gradually escalated.
Lhasa saw at least two days of violence and there have also been protests in provinces which border Tibet.
China says 19 people were killed by rioters and accuses Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama of inciting the violence.
The Tibetan government in exile says at least 130 people have died in a crackdown by Chinese troops and deny any role in the protests.

dr.d - OLYMPICS PRINT NOW UP, by morrissey1 on Mar 29, 2008 17:13:18 GMT 1, I think the "made in China" tag is great....makes sense....most things nowadays say Made in China on em.....good bit of social comment...along with the obvious.....and I hate to be the guy who says this, because there is always some guy who says this, but its true: if this print, the way it looks now (minus the artist name of course) was done by Banksy, we'd all be killing each other for it, the bunfight would be incredible, and most of the comments on the piece would be very, very positive.......so, sometimes it is the art, and not the artisit, IMO'

dr.d - OLYMPICS PRINT NOW UP, by killerkellah on Mar 29, 2008 17:50:32 GMT 1, the fact people are talking about it means the image has done its job, raised awareness and started debate, shame most of the debate is about the art rather than its meaning! oh well....
i personally wouldnt have this on my wall. but cant wait to see it posted it around town where its real message will hit home.

dr.d - OLYMPICS PRINT NOW UP, by darjeeling on Mar 29, 2008 17:57:00 GMT 1, not surprising the debate is about art considering we're on an arts forum - but anyway I doubt there will be much debate from people here that China is a wee bit harsh on freedoms.
But just because you make art about a 'good cause' such as spreading the word about "social injustice" (or is this about spreading the drd logo? hmm...) but even if you make art for a good cause it doesn't mean the art is good.

That being said, don't like this image much saw it last night and passed on the print

dr.d - OLYMPICS PRINT NOW UP, by goffy on Mar 29, 2008 19:03:31 GMT 1, I agree it is a strong image and as a print a limited shelf life for now. But who knows what's going to happen in the future. Political posters are very collectable and this is a good one, I like it. And yes, it would look great on the street. Oh, and darjeeling, get over yourself.

We wouldn't call these small ones 'street art', since apparently they will be going up on Tube trains - and all of us here would be scared sh**less to see one of them coming down the street at us.
The bigger ones, on the other hand, call 'em what you like. We call them posters. And yes, we think they are very good indeed.
In reference to darjeeling's comment "is this about spreading the drd logo?", we have looked very hard and cannot find a dr.d logo on the design. Her initials are in the catalogue code on the lower right, but that's it. Pretty small too, and incredibly useless if dr.d was looking to promote her logo. We know people generally don't spot the initials in the codes on her stuff. It took ages for people to figure out who did the 'H.M.P London' piece. It was all over Flickr and some people had even taken ones off the street and put them on eBay long before anybody pointed out who the artist was.
Love to one and all, All at s-editions

dr.d - OLYMPICS PRINT NOW UP, by goffy on Mar 30, 2008 0:52:50 GMT 1, darjeeling, I have just read your comments after my last post and was wondering 'what is your problem?' If you don't like this forum then why bother visiting here. Who exactly is being spoonfed, if you mean me, you are an idiot who obviously hasn't read any of my posts. Are we not allowed to express an opinion? And what does the label street art got to do with it, because this actually is or arn't we allowed to like it because it's not Banksy!

I had to find a proper flag with the snow lions being white not black! They are a very important symbols for Tibetans so only right... They represent here the country's victorious accomplishment of a unified spiritual and secular life. The Snow Lion forms the insignia of His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibetan Buddhism, and is also represented on Tibet's government seals of office, coins and stamps.

Olympics 'worsening China rights'
China's human rights record is getting worse, not better, because of the Beijing Olympics, a rights group says.
According to Amnesty International, China is clamping down on dissent in a bid to portray a stable and harmonious image ahead of the Games in August.
It urged the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and world leaders to speak out against abuses, including China's handling of protests in Tibet.
US President George W Bush is facing calls to boycott the Games' opening.
"It would be clearly inappropriate for you to attend the Olympic Games in China, given the increasingly repressive nature of that country's government," a group of 15 US politicians wrote in a letter to Mr Bush on Tuesday.
Mr Bush has said he plans to attend the ceremony but Germany's Angela Merkel says she will not. French President Nicolas Sarkozy has not ruled out a boycott.
An IOC team is currently in Beijing to assess its readiness for the Games.
'Beyond reach'
In a report entitled China: The Olympics Countdown, the London-based group said the Olympics had failed to act as a catalyst for reform in China.
It is increasingly clear that much of the current wave of repression is occurring not in spite of the Olympics but actually because of the Olympics Amnesty International report
"Unless the Chinese authorities take steps to redress the situation urgently, a positive human rights legacy for the Beijing Olympics looks increasingly beyond reach," it said.
"It is increasingly clear that much of the current wave of repression is occurring not in spite of the Olympics but actually because of the Olympics."
Activists and dissidents had been targeted as part of an apparent pre-Olympics clean-up, it said, with many under some form of detention.
Journalists, both domestic and foreign, were still prevented from reporting freely.
The group also called on world leaders to speak out on the situation in Tibet, calling a failure to address the issue "tacit endorsement" of human rights abuses.
It accused Chinese troops of using lethal force on Tibetan protesters and urged China to release information about those who had been detained, saying it feared for their safety.
'Prejudice'
On Tuesday, ahead of the publication of the report, China hit out at Amnesty and said any attempt to pressure Beijing over the Olympics would fail.
"The organisation holds prejudice against China, so you can imagine what kind of report it will release," foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said.
Public Security Ministry spokesman Wu Heping also said that Tibetan "independence forces" were planning to launch suicide attacks as part of a wider uprising - a move he blamed on the Dalai Lama.
China says 18 civilians and two police officers died in the unrest in Tibetan and neighbouring provinces inhabited by Tibetans that began on 10 March.
Tibetan groups outside China put the death toll at up to 140, a figure that includes Tibetans they say were killed by Chinese security forces.
All claims about the unrest are difficult to verify because the Chinese government has mostly barred foreign journalists from these sensitive areas.
