Banksy Signature - Barcode, by jarw on Sept 21, 2021 20:39:52 GMT 1, Noticed on the latest Sotheby's auction results that Barcode was signed in pencil and was a duplicate number. After looking at several past auctions results for Barcode it's almost random that the piece was signed in Black Ink or in pencil. Wouldn't Banksy just bang out all the signatures at once for the 150 for that edition. Why are so many in pencil and some in black ink. Anyone have an understanding on why the inconsistency?

Banksy Signature - Barcode, by mrizzle on Sept 21, 2021 21:23:06 GMT 1, Someone better informed than me will no doubt be able to give you a better answer than me but I think you have to keep in mind the relatively maverick manner in which POW operated in those days. Also, some of those early prints were available for quite a considerable period after release so it may also have been that they weren’t all signed at one time. You’ll see the same with the stamps on Barcode (and other prints) in that they’re not universally stamped the same way. Some are stamped on the vertical and some on the horizontal. Again, no real “reason” for this but a quirk which I appreciate.

Banksy Signature - Barcode, by silvermyn on Sept 21, 2021 21:27:10 GMT 1, Back then, I'm pretty sure he signed them as and when they were purchased.
If he had a pen on the day, it would be signed in pen. Otherwise a pencil. I'm just relieved that there wasn't any lipstick to hand.

It was all a bit haphazard back im the day and not limited to Barcode eithers.

Totally true. I've had two different prints from pow that have turned up and not been signed, that I had to send back(Not Banksy prints). I think this is the reason for so many DN's as well.
