Javier Calleja 🇪🇸 Málaga, Spain • Drawings • Sculture, by Express Post on Jun 14, 2019 7:17:14 GMT 1, Were you allowed and did you buy any of the Zink editions?
Redhead was from a different part of his oeuvre, pre characters, more stones, potatos and inanimate objects with eyes. It doesn't look like a bunch of drawings and sketches. They are his prep work/studies for canvases. They are still originals, but visually, they are what they are. It is like going to a concert and watching the artist rehearse and do sound checks, stop half way through a song and have a discussion with the sound engineer.
I've included three examples of works on paper.
Everyone can decide if they like any or none of them. The idea is to compare and contrast his works on paper.
Redhead looks like a complete artwork. These are pictures from his scrapbook. Did you buy the Zink editions? He's sold originals like this 🤷🏻♂️ I'd buy any of his work I was allowed lol.. it's not easy as we know In all honesty I own redhead, searched a while and luckily found one last year.. not a great deal, but it's for the wall always so that's ok.. It's just a head dripping, idk if that's a complete work either

Javier Calleja 🇪🇸 Málaga, Spain • Drawings • Sculture, by touchdowntodd on Jun 14, 2019 7:35:00 GMT 1, €2,800 is way too much for one print from an artist with just a 'long waiting list'... It's the same for Oli Epp in a way - apart from the fact he hasnt hiked prices 10-15x
Have you seen his originals cost? And from 200 to 500 in 6 months is a big price jump lol.. he's also very new.. bad comparison.

Javier Calleja 🇪🇸 Málaga, Spain • Drawings • Sculture, by touchdowntodd on Jun 14, 2019 7:38:31 GMT 1, You could take these prints as sketches, or multiple small finished ideas on a paper.. the characters are basically as developed as they'd be if they were alone as a single piece. That's the way I view em, not to mention it's cool visually for me at least.. I'd have bought an original of similar imagery when I was offered if it didn't have the F word all over

Not at all.. my Javier are never for sale, I've turned down very high offers, and several people on this board that have tried to buy them.. sorry, my only vested interest is liking the artists work, and him and his wife as people.. I'm not buying him as an investment, 95% of what we value now will be worthless before I pass on, and I'll get my money's worth looking at it daily
Comparing him to an artist with 2-3 years of work only as a resume is not fair to his career. And I own Epp work as well..

Javier Calleja 🇪🇸 Málaga, Spain • Drawings • Sculture, by Deleted on Jun 14, 2019 9:22:13 GMT 1, Worst print release in the history of print releases? Price 0/10 Image 0/10 If you bought this you are dumb as dumb Is Thank God you finally joined the site a few days ago. I look forward to your clearly well experienced eye guiding us going forward.
Oh not this again. Being a member on this forum DOES NOT mean you have any knowledge of art at all and vice versa.
Back to the prints..
Zink could have released any of the canvas images as a print and it would have been sold , framed and hung by collectors and fans. This set of 3 sketch pages is a strange choice and frankly terrible art.
Pricing at €3500 is also absurd and totally out of sink with original pricing (small originals are 4-5k) they have cashed in at your expense and made a fortune.
It has and always was going to sell out sadly. You can’t buy brains. 200 flippers now think they are closer to getting an original. They aren’t.
You can’t buy art just based on the name. These will prove in time to be highly Undesirable prints regardless of javiers success.
I am huge fan of his work but was blessed with quality control.,
Case closed

Javier Calleja 🇪🇸 Málaga, Spain • Drawings • Sculture, by JL Broooks on Jun 14, 2019 11:17:20 GMT 1, As with all art, the market has spoken on this release. And the market says "yay". Can't see this being a bad purchase. Zink could easily have sold the full run on pre-sale, but they gave the general market at least a few hours to get in. Fair play.
As for the prints themselves they are different to Calleja's other releases which I guess was deliberate. If you like his Nara inspired boys and girls drawings, what's not to like when you get multiple of them in one print. And there is more to observe and talk about in these prints than the plain one-figure ones (which also are great of course). Just my two cents.

I’ve tried but I can’t see any quality or originality in what he produces. I feel you on this. I actually genuinely want to be moved by his art because he comes across as a good guy and I think he's a creative soul. I also see that a lot of collectors who I follow like him, so shouldn't I like him too? But, I just don't connect with almost any of it. I do find myself enjoying the juxtaposition of the innocent childish cartoon faces with the somewhat harsh statements on their shirts, but not enough to make me interested in owning anything of his. Also, some of his gallery installation pieces I've seen are thoughtful and well executed.
I wonder how much of his recent popularity is being driven by the Asian market? It seems as though he's been a hit over there, and that there are a lot of collectors with infinitely deep pockets going after his work.
But man...there are like 100 other pieces I'd buy for $3k before these prints.

A) unfortunately not online this release, possibly next
B) you have to email the galleries he works with, and they'll tell u lots of us have been emailing for years now
C) varies, but line is very, very long and even big money people are being looked past at this point. Lots of us are still "waiting" since 2016ish. With still no hope in site. They come up on secondary every so often, but you've got to move very fast
Hope that helps. Sounds like a bit of a mystery and a long line, because unfortunately it is

Love this post, and totally respect that train of thought vs some people that just throw negativity. There's something for all of us. That's why we have this passion right? No doubt, I don't think Calleja is a hack, he's just creating art that doesn't do anything for me. It's obviously resonating with a lot of people, so good for them and good for him. It's not my cup of tea. There are a number of artists that I just totally don't get that people here can't seem to get enough of. It's all good.
As a general statement, I feel like $3k+ prints, especially what is an essentially an edition of 210, is egregious. Regardless if they sell out at that price, it's a precedent that now seems like it's becoming the norm. There are a few exceptions, cases where I consider the print itself a work of art, but I can't help but look at many of the prints I own and sometimes think to myself "it's really just a poster with a signature on it." Anyway got sidetracked.

This is why I love art, and the discussion. There's something for everyone.

Javier Calleja 🇪🇸 Málaga, Spain • Drawings • Sculture, by nighthawk on Jun 14, 2019 17:03:35 GMT 1, Javier is awesome! His prices have however dramatically risen in just a year's time. I still have the emails from late 2017 when I stupidly passed on huge OG charcoal drawings at €3.5K
Not too sure why they (his prices) shot up so fast, but my best guess is that his management and galleries figure they will still sell out his shows...so why not!?
Same sort of goes for many artists though, nothing new here.
As for these prints, I was also "disappointed" to not see them go with just one charchater (his best work IMO) as the print. However, the more I've looked at these in the last week or so, the more I really like them! Like someone else said, the collage of different characters really works, and has me going back to it often.

Javier Calleja 🇪🇸 Málaga, Spain • Drawings • Sculture, by Happy Shopper on Jun 14, 2019 17:16:05 GMT 1, Clearly he has fans with deep pockets. These prints remind me of recent work from Mr. (Or is it Mister?) the Japanese artist who works with Murakami. Maybe that’s the market he’s going for... and it seems to be working!

Lol, speaking of artists that do absolutely nothing for me who have fans with extremely deep pockets. There's a whole anime crossover thing going on here with Mr (or is it mister?) that doesn't interest me. I don't see myself or my own story in this art - which is to say it's not relatable, and not a narrative that I find myself in. To each their own.
